I have a friend who has been arguing with me wether he can take Algebra 3,4 Honors instead of Geometry Honors. He already took Algebra 1,2 Honors. I say that he can take it because you don't need Honors Geometry for Algebra 3,4 Honors. he says you have to go in order. Is he able to take Algebra 3,4 instead of Geometry?

I don't think so. It really depends on how your school district operates. In my district (and most others), you have to take geometry before algebra II (your algebra III/IV). Besides, you need geometry to graduate. Have him check with his counselor. (S)he is the only one who can give a definate answer.

He's a freshman like me so we don't have assigned counselors yet.

Ask any counselor then. All of them should be able to give him an answer. If that won't work, do you have a course catalog or any place where you can find the prerequisite(s)?

at my school, you are able to take Algebra II before Geometry. most of the people in my class did it that way.

but like Serendipity said, you should ask a counselor because every school is different.

My friend was annoying me all day at Summer School. Yes, there's a Program of Studies. There are 4 levels Basic, Standard, Honors and AP. Is Geometry equivalent to Alegbra 1,2?

In general, geometry as a class is never equivalent to algebra.

Here's what it says;

Basic Algebra 3, 4
MA4123
1 Credit
Prerequisite: Basic Algebra 1, 2 or equivalent
Dept. Recommendation
This college preparatory course, a basic
course in second year algebra, is designed
for students who will derive the most
benefit from a structured approach to the
fundamentals of algebra. Most of the topics
from Algebra 3, 4 will be covered but in a
more tangible and intuitive fashion.
This course will not adequately prepare a
student for pre-calculus.

Algebra 3, 4
MA4133
1 Credit
Prerequisite: Algebra 1,2 or equivalent
This course reviews and significantly
extends the principles and techniques of
first year algebra. In addition, sequences,
quadratic and logarithmic functions,
probability, and regression models are
studied. Graphic as well as algebraic representation
is emphasized. Although the
real number is paramount, considerable
work with the complex number system is
included.

Algebra 3, 4 Honors
MA4143
1 Credit
Prereq.: Geom. 1, 2 Honors or equivalent
& Dept Recommendation
This course, through a rigorous and
abstract approach, reviews and extends
the principles and techniques of first year
algebra. In addition, sequences, conic
sections, logarithmic functions and the
complex numbers are studied.Topics from
matrices, theory of equations, and
probability are also studied.
A graphing calculator is necessary.

My friend is sleeping over so we're still arguing about this. I'm trying to help him.

Based on that, if he wants to take honors, he has to take geometry first. I'd think that if algebra I/II = geometry than they would just say algebra I/II like in the first two.

For Honors Algebra III, IV you'd need geometry, but not for regular or basic.

Which is kind of wierd.

I know it'sreally weird, but I think he could take it anyways. Algebra 2 doesn't require Geometry, he's going to take geometry anyways next summer, if he takes Algebra 2.

Or, he could do Geometry, and then Algebra 2 in the summer.

Algebra 2 seemed more like a review of Algebra 1, and some more stuff too me, but Geometry was more like a whole new thing. So doing Algebra 2 during the summer seems (at least to me), a lot easier than Geometry during the summer.

No, Summer School with Geometry is better than Algebra 2. Obviously there is not a honors class in the summer. Would that affect him in anyway because I'm trying to be a good friend and i don't want t be responsible for like ruining his chances at the colleges of his dreams?

Plus I owe him so much.

Should he ask the Math Department Supervisor or a Guidance Counselor? He's more of a math person than proofs and logic.

Firstly, math IS proofs AND logic.
Secondly, there is a little bit of Geometry in AlgII. If he knows basics, like, what is sine/cosine then he may take AlgII first.
Thirdly, he can't skip Geometry by no means as will hurt him for pre-calc.
However, it's better to take Geom right before pre-calc in summer.

Sine, Cosine, Tangent are stuff you could learn in Algebra 2. Anyways they're really easy concepts.

Haha.

We learned all that stuff (sin, cos and tan) in Algebra 1. And again in Geometry.

I guess he could take Algebra 2. That's cool, he's with a higher class if he does.
