Math SAT II In The Eyes Of AO

I’m taking SAT subject tests tomorrow. Originally, I had planned to take Math II but I do not feel anywhere near ready enough. For top-tier colleges, is a good score in Math Level 1 a weakness as I am currently enrolled in high-level math courses (AP Calc BC)? Should I take a different test instead?

What major are you applying to?

For a university with a subject test required (not just considered) and a STEM major, math 1 would probably look bad.

Are you sure you’re not ready? What practice materials did you use?

Also, don’t define “ready” as “definitely getting an 800” A score that starts with 7 is still possible even if you miss or skip a number of problems and will still look OK to most schools. (Caltech sees mostly 780 and 800.)

@VickiSoCal I’m definitely a STEM major, most likely Neuroscience and Psychology

If you are in calculus, that presumes that you know your precalculus material, so you should not be afraid of math level 2.

If you’ve taken trig and pre-calc and done well in those courses, you’re ready. Neither of my kids was interested in a STEM field, and both took the Math 2 exam in June of their junior year, after taking pre-calc. Both scored in the 750/760 range. Not MIT-worthy, but respectable. I know that one of my son’s classmates got into Georgetown with a lower score than that. If you want to major in a STEM field, you definitely need the Math 2.
