My D is not so great at math, but wants to study subjects in the future that require math proficiency. She is currently taking Honors Pre-Calc (she's a junior) but she doesn't understand it because she does not understand the foundation it is built on. She gets easily frustrated and gives up, and quite frankly does not give herself a chance. Are there summer camps that are geared for students like her that need help with math (as opposed to the ones for math geniuses)? Thank you!

I had a similar problem back in middle school. Instead of finding some expensive residential camp, I went to a Kumon type program about 5 minutes away one hour a week on saturday mornings. It was the best thing I could have done for myself. I finally got the basic algebra foundation I needed even though it was a painful struggle. Sophomore year I earned 99%ile in Math on the PSAT and have straight A+'s. And the place I went to was not private tutoring, it had about 30 kids with 5 or 6 instructors at cafeteria tables.

Holes in math foundation can really trip on up in the high levels. A cost effective approach is to take a basic math review class at your local community college. They go right back to the beginning, and hit everything, quickly. My BS honor/AP d/s quietly took the most basic CC math class over the summer - it made a huge difference.

A lot of really smart kids are accelerated or jump past some basics - it catches up with them later. Basic review is never a bad thing - but don't put it on one's college app.

Check out SummerMath at Mt. Holyoke College. It's a program for high school girls, both those who love math and those who are not so enamoured with it. There are math-related workshops, as well as several hours of actual math instruction (with girls placed into appropriate levels for their skills) daily. My daughter had a great time there.
