Math Waiver

I am an Undergraduate Studio Art major specializing in Painting. I am based in Texas and am struggling with math. I am almost a junior in college and still stuck in remedial math courses. I am 31 years old and want so badly to push forward but math is killing me. I feel my art portfolio is strong and I have good grades all around except in math. I am currently attending a community college in San Antonio, where I am from and plan on transferring to University of Houston next fall. Have any Art students out there managed to get a Math waiver or get Math replaced with a different class? I’m hoping they will notice my effort, view my portfolio and waive the class. I feel embarrassed asking for a shortcut but it’s worth a shot. I’m considering leaving TX to attend an art school of some sort if it doesn’t work out.

Sounds like you might have dyscalculia. A lot of colleges have been known to waive math requirements over it, but you definitely want to get a diagnosis. I don’t know about U of H, but it’s worth talking to an adviser about.

If math is required for graduatiion, you can check with your advisor about a course substitution. Requirements are not waived. Yo can check disability services for assistance in finding someone to evaluate the potential of a learning disability.
