Math104 placement exam

How hard is it and how does it differ from the AP Calc BC test?

i dunno how it differs from the bc test, but i know that the placement tests are generally harder. and that math is much harder than the bc exam.

...unfortunately.

so even if you get a 5 on ap calc bc you still need to take the placement exam for math104?

There are two different exams. One to get credit for Math 104 if you didn't get a 5 on AP BC, and one that you take to see if you should be in the course.

I only took the one to see if you should be in the course, and it was pretty difficult. The good thing about it though, is that they don't make you drop to a lower level if you do not do well, it is just to give you an idea if you should be in the course. I got a 16/20 on the exam, and they said you should stay in if you got a 10 or above, and I still found the class extremely difficult.

thanks for the reply.

You found Math 104 difficult? How is it difficult? I found Calc AB (IB PSU Calc) to be really really easy.

I had a lot of friends who did well in AB (5's on AP Test), and found Math 104 their hardest freshman class.

did you take math 104 or 114 thebutton?

I'm in Wharton so I only had to take 104.

does anyone have any insight on the chem101 placement test? how hard does penn make 1st semester chemistry for hopefuls to exempt?

http://www.math.upenn.edu/ugrad/calc/math104.html

Here are some sample tests

Can anyone say how hard Math104 usually is for someone who got a 7 in IB Math HL (with the Statistics option)?

Chem 101 is a HARD placement test. I walked in definitely too cocky, i had gotten a 6 on the IB HL exam. I completely bombed it.

that said, the material is not difficult if you can get a good score in AP or IB. You just need to study for some college level-spcific material - IE the quantumn arrangement of a molecule and the adjoining mathematics of this phenomena.

Math 104 is a class designed to root out whartonites and engineers. if you got a 7 in IB HL math.. I would suggest you just take 114. You can get retroactive credit for 104 upon completion of 114.

Well, just for some varying perspective, I got a 5 on Calc AB and found Math 104 to be pretty straightforward, although mostly new material.

is there anything lower than 104 that we can take, as far as math goes? and 101 for chem? what happens if you take the test and they determine that you shouldn't be in the class?

yes, there are one or two levels lower than 104... math103 is essentially precalc/some calc, i think

aranaxon: you made me scared of the chem101 test!
how long does it take, what format of questions are there, and if i got a 4 on the ap chem test in 2004, do i have enough time to cram to pass this?

also, approx. how many people pass it?

I didn't take it, but I heard the Chem 101 placement test is pretty difficult and very few people pass it, so I wouldn't get your hopes too high. It covers material not on the AP.

Lots of quantum mechanics and solid state structure and stuff like that

math 104's probably not gonna be too bad if you can make a 4 or 5 on the BC test, right?

about the chem test...if you don't pass, then you're in chem101, right?
