Okay, so I was recently admitted to UCLA with Chemistry as my major and from what I have heard, we science majors need to take the mathematics placement exam. However, how am I supposed to register for it???

It happens at orientation

thank you :)

I think you could take it online, before orientation. It is also available at orientation but it’s not the preferable way to write it.

how do i sign up for it online? is there any particular link i should go to?

Go to New Admits page and find the link to Math Placement info. I don’t think the actual test will be up until later in the summer.

From the UCLA website:

Used the search: math diagnostic
[UCLA Department of Mathematics](<a href=“Undergraduate Program | UCLA Department of Mathematics”>Undergraduate Program | UCLA Department of Mathematics)
Exam Begins:June 1, 2013
Exam Ends:June 30, 2013
Location:Online Exam

thanks so much!! this really helped :)

Also, how should one know if taking the Mathematics placement exam is required? Is it indicated on a portal or…?

Your orientation counselor will tell you if you need to, but if you get a 5 on AP Calc AB or a 4/5 on BC, you don’t take it. There are probably some other ways of getting out of it (CC credit for instance) but the main way is getting the above AP grades.

@thelonewanderer, I received a 5 on AP Calc AB, but I haven’t sent in the score yet. All of my AP scores will be sent to UCLA in July, but the placement exam is in June. Should I rush my Calc score and pay the $15 fee or am I able to wait until July?

It’s better off to just take the test and save yourself the rush order fee. It’s relatively easy and doesn’t require knowledge beyond precalculus (I think it was precalc :x)

Maybe things have changed since I was admitted as a chemistry major three years ago, but I never even bothered to find out if I should take the math placement exam. Granted I already knew my AP scores will place me into a math class, but there was never any mention of taking the exam until I went to orientation and my counselor/new student advisor (or someone in Murphy) gave me credit from my AP scores, and I enrolled in my appropriate class.

hmm well that was my confusion as well when signing up for orientation when I was admitted, and that’s why I chose a later one. But I’m sure they know much about the process in the earlier ones, so just express your concerns to your NSA when the time comes if he/she does not address them. I know it’s kinda scary and worrisome about all these things (believe me, we all went through it), but they all have their way of working out over here if you’re persistent. This goes beyond just a placement test also. In any case, good luck and welcome to UCLA =]
