Any experienced University of South Carolina students/parents have any experience with packing/moving/storage companies that work with the students to get the contents of their dorm stored/moved home for the summer? We live in New York, and the finals/dorms closing schedule is mid-week. My DS will have to do it on his own, but with finals, will have to get the packing done early…
My DS is a sophomore and we used Dorm Room Movers last year and will use them again this year. We live near Boston and driving down was not an option for us; he also does not have a car to be able to drive to a storage facility with his belongings. Dorm Room Movers offered an early sign up discount, provided boxes and packing materials, and came to his dorm for the pick up the day after his finals. He stored his dorm contents including mini fridge, books, coffee maker, etc, in the boxes. In August, they delivered his boxes to his new dorm room for moving back in. He flew home in May with one big suitcase and his backpack; the rest stayed in Columbia for the summer. Based on our experience, I would recommend looking into them. FYI - they will also ship boxes to your location, so that is also an option they offer. Best of luck!
@Dotmom15 This sounds great. We were thinking of something similar, but this sounds almost full service. Can you tell us something about the cost? Thanks!
Thanks @Dotmom15! I actually found them on a google search yesterday, and they reached out to me! I think I am going to use them, just not sure how much we are going to store and how much we are going to ship home, i.e. all the stuff he thought he needed and learned, within the first week, he really didn’t!
BTW if you have stuff you just don’t want to bother with bringing home, tell your student to look out for information on “Give it up for Good” drive at end of year. Food, clothing and other stuff is collected as students move out. Eligible food is donated to Harvest Hope (food bank) and the remaining is sold at huge yard sale with proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity. Look it up on USC website.
@Gora14 I think it was $200-ish for the boxes/packing materials, pickup in May, summer storage, and delivery back in August to his new dorm.
As usual, SCMom12, you have great info and I will mention the Give it Up for Good to my DS as well!
