My friend last year had to miss the first 2-3 weeks as well and had to get a friend to do the assignments for him. So to some extent, it would affect your performance.

For those who have taken this course… what’s the point of the textbook if they’re not necessary/important? Are there assignments from the text?

no assignments from the text book except this small book called the double helix but I didn’t read it and could still do the hw. They just give you credit for doing hw, no grade or anything

you won’t need the textbook since he covers everything he tests you on in his lectures…

have you tried emailing one of the gsi’s? i’m sure they can work this out with you better than we can… they might be able to give you a separate assignment to make up for the 2 weeks you miss, or something like that…

Honestly, I expected the final to be like the midterms. It wasn’t… thus I became unprepared. Basically topics that were not emphasized on the midterms were emphasized on the final.

^^ cake yo. i would write like a paragraph for mine compared to the few sentences others write, but they give the same credit regardless as long as you submit them on time.

I’m really only willing to take a letter grade for MCB N61 if I get an A. I’m a pretty good student but my background in the sciences is sub-par at best and I’m kind of apprehensive about this being a really easy class until the final and then your A gets turned into an A-/B+ and I’m just not really willing to take a hit, however minimal, on my GPA for this class.

Do you guys think this is one of those classes where part of your grade just depends on chance? Thanks.

well, I do not think that your grade in this class depends on chance at all… and you really do not need any background in sciences either – at least I don’t have, just took it, and got an A+. The secret is to buy online lecture notes (summer 08), not wasting time with lectures (misleading emphasis) – you can occasionally come to check where the class is in the notes though–, and not reading the textbook (irrelevant).
