MCB C100A Spring '11

So how difficult is this class? Especially with Krantz (average reviews on ratemyprof, etc). Is it as hard as everyone says?

I see that the class for spring is substantially smaller than the fall one (80 vs. 200). Is there a reason why?

Also, is it horrible to take this along with Bio1A+1AL (I can use AP Bio credit for the bio pre-req for mcb c100a).

And this is just a minor concern, but are the midterms for this class in-class?

I'll be a second year and I'll be taking two other easy classes besides these two bio ones. My other choice was/is Physics 8B with Liphardt (which still has a lot of room, so I can still go back to doing Bio1A+L and Physics8B but they really ruin my schedule).

All the courses are very doable, but look at what you got on your plate. From your experiences with science courses already, you should know that they’re not all necessarily difficult, but it requires a lot of time to do well. That being said, 100a requires a lot of studying simply because I dont think it’s like anything that you’ve learned before. And I think it would be ridiculously horrendous to take it with bio1a+1al unless those are the only two/three courses you are taking. Bio1a and lab already take a HUGE chunk of your time.

Midterms for Bio1a are in class. First 1al is outside of lab period. 2nd midterm is in lab. I think 100a first midterm is in class but 2nd and third are at night.

Is Physics 8B more time consuming than MCB c100a?

I have always hated the second half of physics, and I’ve heard that 8B is horrible compared to 8A.

I haven’t taken 100a, but I didn’t think Physics 8B was super time-consuming. I think, in general, people don’t take physics as seriously as, say, Bio 1AL, and de-prioritize studying for it, so the exam curves are usually pretty generous. I thought 8B was more time-consuming than 8A because I personally found the material a lot harder, but I think 8A/8B difficulty depends on the individual (and also the professor you have).

I’m going to take this class too!

It’s not really a traditional biology course, despite it being in the MCB department, but more of a math/calculation heavy physics/chemistry course. You have to do lots of problems or you’ll have trouble.

The nice thing is the overall curve, it’ll probably help you out a lot, but the material is tough and a lot different from what you’ve seen in other bio courses (aka no rote memorization except for a few things.)

Cool class though
