McCormick vs. Weinberg - Bio/CompSci

Long time lurker here!

I'm applying for NU RD. I'm primarily interested in Biological research / CompSci.

McCormick offers Biomedical Engineering as a major and Weinberg offers Biological Sciences as a major. Both have computer science courses so I could take some as electives probably. I was wondering what the major difference is between the biological majors at these two schools.

Or maybe just the general differences between the two schools? Any input is appreciated!

Thanks!

I’ve been waiting for someone to answer this question, because I was in the same situation with computer science. But I guess I’ll comment on it since I did a bit of research. From what I’ve researched, Weinberg would give a liberal arts background to the major because of the language and distribution requirements, as well as the freshman seminars. All of those are an addition to the major requirements. Personally I’m going to choose CompSci at Weinberg just because I want that liberal arts background. I assume McCormick would be more math and science oriented due to it being an engineering school.

They are pretty different at the undergrad level. It’s pretty easy to see the differences by just comparing the curriculum. The department websites also show the various research the faculty are doing. At that level, there can be significant overlaps. But if you read enough of them, the differences should become apparent. In general, as far as research goes, sciences are more about understanding of how things work or behave while engineering is more about the application of sciences to solve problems, make useful products, etc.
