McDonough School of Business (Georgetown) vs Dyson AEM (Cornell)

I got off the waitlist at Cornell and Georgetown, into Dyson and MSB. I’m really torn because Georgetown was always my dream school, but Cornell was kind of just off my radar until I got in and I’ve looked into it and like it a lot.

My favorite thing about Cornell is Dyson - how small it is, collaborative, and how your class really forms connections with each other in Dyson, as well as the sorority/frat presence on campus.

My least favorite thing about Cornell is location - it’s cold, in the middle of no where, very outdoors-ish (which I am not), and I’m scared there’s not a lot to do outside campus, as well as the large overall population of undergrads

My favorite thing about Georgetown is the location, the small student population and smaller campus, and McDonough only has around 350 students.

My least favorite thing about Georgetown is the chance of competitiveness (I’ve heard there is and isn’t), club culture, and that sororities are not recognized by the school. I also don’t LOVE the core curriculum but I think I would get over that.

Study abroad is also very important to me, but I don’t know if one school has a clear advantage over the other in that category.

Any advice would be awesome!

Georgetown is a really happy campus and a great location… if cost is similar choose Georgetown!! Also, both schools are equally competitive.

Both are absolutely top notch and offer similar opportunities. Choose the least expensive one.

Academics are excellent at both. Many serious students find Cornell’s large undergraduate student body of over 15,000 to be quite annoying, Georgetown’s is only half that size. Washington DC is considerably better than Ithaca from a social, cultural and weather standpoint. Most likely little difference in cost, so Georgetown all the way.

I read that you have also been accepted off the waitlist for NYU-Stern.

What is the annual COA for each of your options including Fordham after applying your scholarship award ?

What is your intended major ? Finance ?

Career objective ?

@belovedbytoni

Georgetown is a good school, certainly, but not an Ivy. And if you look at any head to head comparison vs. Georgetown vs ANY IVY online, you get a swarm of G-town students building up their school. Notice the Ivies do not need this validation? McDonough is behind Dyson in every national ranking and not even close to Cornell international rankings, as a university; Cornell is usually #20 while G-town is #100-200. McDonough’s acceptance rate is 15.84%, while Dyson’s is 2.9%. The Dean of Admissions, Charles Deacon, told my uncle 32 years ago (yep, he has been there that long!), we accept transfers from the Ivies when they can not hack the Ivies. Meaning, we are a notch below. That story is 100% true and that is from the guy who is in charge of composing the entire undergraduate population. I think that says it all. By the way Cornell is FRIENDLY they do not have a cockiness that other’s do. And the prep school boy culture so prevalent at most top B-Schools. Nonexistent at Dyson.

@Publisher My intended major is finance or accounting most likely - unsure of what my career objective really is.

COA for Cornell would be around $55,000 (I’m in state and Dyson is part of land grant)
whereas Georgetown would be around $75,000.

Fordham - $45,000
Elon - $35,000
Northeastern - $50,000
William and Mary - $65,000
Villanova - $75,000
NYU - $75,000
BC - $75,000

Those were some approximations. (I was also accepted to Richmond and Providence but I’m not considering those schools)

Cornell instate is the best value by far.
(You don’t qualify for Excelsior?)

In one of your other threads, you indicated that you might have to take out some student loans in order to afford Georgetown. Since Cornell-Dyson is $20,000 per year less costly, Cornell-Dyson appears to be your best option.

If you major in accounting and want to start your career in a Big 4 accounting firm, then almost all of your options can get you there. But, if you want to work in the consulting / advisory division (higher pay, more interesting work, & prestigious) then Cornell-Dyson, NYU-Stern, or Georgetown are your best options, followed by BC, Villanova, Northeastern, WM. & Mary, and Fordham. (I do not know much about Elon.)

If you want to major in finance & work on Wall Street, then NYU-Stern offers the best career opportunities–but it is quite expensive as is Georgetown.

Since you like most aspects of Cornell-Dyson, save the extra $80,000 and enjoy the benefits & rewards of Dyson.

@MYOS1634 what is Excelsior?

As a NYS resident, you’re entitled to a scholarship that decreases the cost of the contract colleges at Cornell. Excelsior is the name of the state scholarship, a last-dollar state grant that covers SUNY tuition for families that make 125K a year or less; Dyson costs way more than a SUNY but you still get a discount.
What does your FA package indicate?
