I unfortunately have a B in the first semester of pre-calculus my sophomore year does this disqualify me?
They are pretty strict about minima. You are fine for the Faculty of Arts…in fact well above the minima. My son is a U1 in the Faculty of Arts studying Economics and is incredibly happy at the school.
Minima: https://www.mcgill.ca/applying/requirements/usa#grades
Thank you, I also saw that mathematics and finance are listed under majors in the Faculty of arts. Is it true that I could major in math or finance from the faculty of arts?
Math is available through Arts leading to a Bachelor of Arts and Science leading to a Bachelor of Science. The Faculty of Arts math major requires fewer credits in math but additional courses could be taken as electives.
Finance is only available through Desautels but Arts students can do a minor in finance.
Depending on your first year GPA you may be able to transfer into Science although transfer is competitive.
@TomSrOfBoston Thank you. In your opinion would I have a decent shot at the Faculty of Arts?
@SwimmingDad Thanks!
I think you have a shot at Sciences, too. Be aware that no one cares about your ethnicity(unless you are a native French speaker from a French speaking country, in which case you get an awesome price break), and that you need a 4 or 5 on your AP courses to count them towards credit at the school, but that is the norm at many schools in the US, also.
Getting an A, or at least an A- on Calc BC would help your chances. Your ACT is fine.
There are multiple ways to study Econ at McGill. You should qualify for at least the Arts Econ.
Finance tends to be through Desautels school of Management. That tends to be a harder admit, similar to the Science Faculty. They might have less stringent requirements for Math and Chem/Physics marks, though.
No AP Econ at your school? Given your interests, seems to be a natural.
Good luck.
@57special unfortunately no AP Economics. Would you recommend paying it safe and applying for the faculty of arts?

On the McGill application you can apply to two different programs. You can apply to Arts and Science on the same application. Each choice is evaluated separately. A denial for Science would not affect your application for Arts.
Note: “Arts and Science” is a separate option in addition to “Arts” and “Science”.
@TomSrOfBoston Thanks, is the only deadline for applications at Mcgill January 15?
From US students the deadline is 1/15 but you have until 3/15 to submit supporting documents. McGill admission is rolling.
@TomSrOfBoston Oh should I apply as soon as possible then because I was thinking of taking the ACT again…
Application submission does not necessarily correlate to finding out early, @Proxy123. If you look at last year’s results threads, lots of kids applied in August, but didn’t hear until March. Many applicants received “Further Review Pending” if McGill wanted to see semester 1 grades. On the flip side, my daughter got lucky and was admitted 2 weeks after she submitted her application in January.
Based on results posted here on CC in past years students who are significantly above the minimum requirements will receive decisions first. They have come out as early as late November. The closer you are to the minima the longer the wait. A statement on the McGill Admissions website (which I can not find now) confirmed this practice.
@TomSrOfBoston I understand if this cannot be answered but would I be considered significantly above the minimum for the arts program?
I would say somewhat above. A decision would not be in the first wave.
@Proxy123 what @TomSrOfBoston said!
S1 got into Desautels pretty early…I’m thinking Feb/Mar? He didn’t get his application in till the last minute, but I don’t think that he is a good example to go by as he is Canadian, and an athlete. His stats were similar to yours, though he had more AP courses. If you can get an “A” in AP Calc BC and AP Physics then that would impress the Science folks.
With your interests, you might want to look at Desautels, also. It’s fairly hard to get into, but you’d have a good shot. It is pretty pricey for US students though, as opposed to Arts.
Keep in mind that CAN Universities don’t factor in gr. 9.
@57special Thank you very much for the information. If you don’t mind me asking, does rolling admissions mean I would have a better chance of being accepted if I applied ASAP?
