McGill chances?

Hey, anyone have any opinions on whether its feasible? i'm a senior at a pretty competitive high school. my number one choices are UMD college park (in-state), and Mcgill (applying for in-state tuition due to dual citizenship). I am interested in majoring in engineering, love math, and also love music and if possible would spring for a jazz guitar minor

Unfortunately the transcript is not on edline like it was last year so the grades are from memory, but im almost positive these are right. UW GPA was about 3.6 and weighted around 4.1

EC's: I teach guitar at a local music school, to a few weekly students. Multiple music summer camps, both volunteering and working, several gigs worth mentioning, national honor society, science honor society, french honor society (officer this year)

~400 service hours

first generation french immigrant

probably the thing I am most worried about is my precalc grades since the class is listed as a prereq for engineering and that A- is required for prerequisites. however i proceeded to get a 5 on the calc exam so idk

I’m from Montreal so I know lots about McGill. You have a fair chance of getting in based off your GPA (which is pretty good). McGill is a very competitive school so it’s a bit of a reach for everyone. However, as I said your chances are very solid.

Chance me back

thanks. yeah your right mcgill’s no joke, especially for someone like me who doesnt have 2400 or 4.0. would it be fair to say UMD is a match? any other opinions would be appreciated as well

Yeah. UMD would a good match school.

McGill is NOT a “reach-for-anyone”, and there are two levels of “out-of-state tuition” one for non-Quebecers but still have Canadian citizenship and yet another one for those who don’t have Canadian citizenship either.

McGill: High match (writing score holding you back; for electrical, computer, software, mining, materials and general engineering) Reach (for biomedical, chemical, civil and mechanical engineering)
UMD: Match

Catria you’re wrong. McGill is ranked higher than universities like Duke, Cal Berkeley, and Brown. So yes. It is a bit of a reach school for everyone. I’m a legacy at McGill so I know more about it than you so you shouldn’t act like you know everything about every university.

catria: i have a french citizenship, and i know for a fact that this allows me to pay in-providence as if i were from montreal. not sure if thats what you were referring to though. thanks for the response though.

how exactly does applying to these different majors work? do i have to pick one when applying and hope i get in? or is it a matter of choosing a few that im interested and then can pick based on which ones accept or reject me?

[Admissions standards for previous years | Undergraduate Admissions - McGill University](http://www.mcgill.ca/undergraduate-admissions/counsellors-and-advisors/united-states/admissions-standards-previous-years)

Since McGill admissions are not holistic…

In a few years, though, McGill could become a “reach-for-anyone” with respect to American students, though.
