I'm a classical guitar student and I expect to be at the level (royal conservatory gr 9) McGill is asking for come audition time. I'm wondering what other people's experience with auditions there were like and if it is truly as tough to get in as people say. I have theory down & should be able to have enough keyboard proficiency in time (if not I know they have a course for that for first year, right?). My average is about 90% and I've won MANY music awards at my high school. Please help me estimate my odds and share your audition experience! Thank you!

Are you applying as a composer (based on your name) or as a performance major?

I was hoping composition, and recording later in graduate studies

Their website states:
“Applicants for Composition are asked to submit two or three samples of their written work.”
Having great proficiency on an instrument will be a big help, but they want to see what you’ve put on paper if you intend on being a comp major.

As you know, you will need to audition on an instrument in addition to submitting a portfolio. My son was also a classical guitarist applying for composition. I don’t know how he compared to other performance majors in classical guitar. I can say he played for a few years and is pretty good, but probably not at the level of those focused on guitar as their major. And he got in. So, I think the portfolio drives most of the decision.

The audition was very straight forward. There were 2 or 3 guitar professors present. He played everything he had prepared.
