Graduate music applicant

Greetings,

I applied to McGill for my Master of Music degree. I have already had my audition at the music school and it went very well. I auditioned at two other schools and have one more scheduled, but I am considering cancelling it.

However, I was wondering.. do any of you know anything about acceptance into the university for grad students?

I have a 3.55 gpa with all A's in my music courses, but a few C's and even one D+ in gen ed courses from my first year of college. I understand McGill is an academically rigorous school - what is expected of international graduate students? How much weight will my audition and very good recommendations have on my acceptance?

I'd really like to end up at McGill, but hope my gpa will not affect my chances negatively. Any insight??

Thanks.

[MTA: International because I am from the U.S.]

If you are auditioning for performance, then your audition will be the decisive factor. If you play very well, then your GPA should be good enough. However, if you are applying for graduate work in theory, composition, musicology etc, then your academic background will be very important. The few music performance grad students that I have known at McGill had similar undergrad GPA’s to yours.

I noticed that you have completed an audition, so I assume that you have applied as a performance major–your level of playing will be the important consideration. My son is in music at McGill and loves it. We are visiting him this weekend, so are across the street from the university now.

If you want more feedback about any music program, you will probably get more advice in the music board rather than here on the McGill board.

Best of luck!

Thanks so much for your response. I will post a similar question over on the music board.

Glad to hear your son likes it there. When I visited for my audition I thought it was a great place. Plus I have worked in the past with the teacher I auditioned for and would really love to make it happen!
