McGill or UCL?

Hello everyone, I’m writing to see if people can give me advice on the tricky decision I have to make. I’ve been accepted in McGill and UCL (University College London). I’m planning on majoring in Economics. I really can’t make a decision. My goal is to go to a university where I can make friends, build a network and get good grades so I can go to nop-notch grad school (ivy league or Oxbridge).

You can do that at both of these places, so it is perfectly fine for you to choose based on cost or ease of travel or whatever else strikes your fancy.

Also where you can/will work.

Obviously McGill would have a greater name recognition and network in North America (especially Canada) while UCL will in Europe (especially the UK).

Also, the grading system will be very different. In the UK system, your marks come down almost solely to big tests at the end of the year. In North America, it’s continuous assessment and GPA is cumulative. Which system are you use to?

Length and costs probably differ too. You’ll definitely have more opportunity to take classes outside econ at McGill. You will be limited to what your degree spells out at UCL.

Thank you for your answer. I’m used to the continuous assessment module and tbh switching to the British system kind of scares me. But I have absolutely no idea where I want to work after finishing my studies and this is why I am really lost right now.

Montreal is probably more student friendly financially than London.
What “course” or program were you admitted to?

@MYOS1634 Hello! Yeah, I heard that too about Montreal. Regarding the course, I got into UCL’s pure economics programme.

Well, what citizenship/permanent residency/passports do you have?

That would limit where you can work. Except in Canada. If you go to McGill, you may work in Canada.
