I figured. Thanks.
@SwimmingDad Thanks for the update! Everyone mentions the “no handholding”, but I am not sure what “handholding” other colleges do that McGill does not. Can you provide some examples?
Thanks!
His first year he worked doing research for a private equity firm. His second year he worked for a startup doing partnerships and alliances. Last summer he thought he was going to end up at a Venture Capital firm but that dried up with COVID. This semester he is doing research for a Montreal based startup. In his perfect world, he would end up at a PE or VC - but that is a tight job market to begin and this year it is even worse. He is in discussions with several firms and start ups. We shall see where this takes him!
Advisors - your student will have to seek them out. They won’t, by default, schedule with you. Career Services - your student will need to seek these out. They won’t get email after email telling them what to do when.
As a parent, almost 100% of information goes directly to your child unless they are under 18. This is per Quebec privacy laws. US parents struggle mightily with this. Also, there are no “parents weekend” or other parent centric events. Two years ago we had a mom insist that Homecoming was for parents and then was raging when she got to Montreal and there were no events for her.
I hope that helps!
@SwimmingDad Thanks. That all sounds just fine! Appreciate your clarifying.
These sound great but to clarify - were these opportunities he found through the school or were they through his personal/family connections?
yeah I completely agree. Most people I know who applied the day applications opened have not heard back yet when people I know who applied end of December have. It’s weird and incredibly frustrating
exactly a month after my application changed to reviewed - decision pending (today) i was admitted to bioengineering pending final results. good luck to everyone still waiting!
Thank you for this! I got into Bio-Phys-Computational Sci a month ago, but had reviewed-decision pending for bioengineering.
Checked again today and got in for bioengineering!
Hi all! I’m seriously considering McGill and was wondering if anyone could tell me about the food quality at McGill—what is the meal plan like and what do students typically think of the food served?
He found them on his own. The PE firm because the Managing Partner knew of the HS. The startups completely on his own
I can give you the background from “normal” (not COVID) times. Truth: it is a weakness of the school. It is expensive (everything is a la carte) and most kids budget. A lot of kids will eat breakfast in their rooms (e.g., bowl of cereal or oatmeal) - all McGill dorm rooms have a very nice sized mini fridge. The quality of the food was just fine - not amazing but not horrible.
The other great thing is you are in the middle of Montreal - there are lots of great places to grab a cheap meal when you need a break from cafeteria food. My son was on a fairly tight budget and was able to make it all work.
What were your stats if you don’t mind me asking?
