McGill University '25 (entering fall '21) for US students - thoughts? doubts? stats? results?

It’s painfully slow, isn’t it?! I just hope everyone hears before having to potentially commit to a US school.

Thank you to those that answered my question about proof of citizenship. I called McGill Service Point, and they stated that AP exams would be strictly for credit purposes and either not taking AP exams or performing poorly on AP exams would not affect an offer of admission.

Congratulations. My son got offers from Desautels and Arts. He wants to join Desautels. Have to pay more fees to Desautels since it is a business school and hope it is worth the fees.

Hi! Does anyone know how to find out the dates for start and end of classes? I am an international (US) student, and need to fill out many forms for a student visa, but the info I found for start and end dates didn’t look official. I got September 1 2021-April 29, 2021

*April 29, 2022

I believe that this is official.

Orientation begins a week or so before classes start.

Hi,
My daughter just received approval for her CAQ. We also attended the International Student presentation for applying for CAQ and student visa. We were told to put in Sept 1, 2021 as the start and Aug 31, 2025 as the end. Call international student services if you have questions. I have done so on several occasions and they are quick to answer.

I am going to decline my offer of admission, so hopefully that gives another McGill hopeful a spot!!

Thanks for doing that sooner rather than later, that’s kind of you. Do you know where you will end up next year?

Not sure yet, got some tempting offers from LACs that I really like (Colby, Midd, Bates, Oberlin, Sarah Lawrence), and still waiting on some ones that I ALSO really like! Gonna wait until all options are clear - April 7!

McGill is the polar opposite of a LAC in terms of environment.

I know it is frustrating, but the “top-down” way is the only way that makes sense for McGill to admit students. Since they only look at test scores and grades, it would not be fair of them to admit students randomly because that would result in them rejecting those who deserve a spot more than others. Also, keep in mind that different faculties have different cut-offs! Anyways, good luck and I hope you hear back soon

Congratulations! Feel free to PM with any questions (just answered your Desautels waitlist question…kinda). My son is finishing up next month - last year he said to me “McGill is the best decision I’ve ever made in my life”.

S21 still grappling with decision on whether to accept Desautels. Dual citizen who has lived his whole life in Southern California. I attended McGill and think he should attend but he is weighing it against some of his UC options here in California. His fear is that McGill doesn’t have the same brand recognition here for internships and career opportunities. Anyone have an opinion?

Where does your son hope to live after graduation? My son graduated from Desautels (before it was Desautels!). He and some American classmate friends had no problem finding a career job in New England and New York.

Indeed. And that’s why myself, an indecisive teenager, applied to both.

Hi Tom, how is Desautels reputation in Canada? My son got an admission offer from Desautels. He is an international student and wants to take up a job in Canada after Desautels for 2 to 3 years before he does Master’s degree. I hope Desautels students get campus job placement in Canadian companies. Please share your thoughts.

My son was accepted for engineering in February, about one week after submitting self-reported mid-year grades. We received notice of a pretty good sum for financial aid, which will make the decision more difficult (McGill vs University of Michigan).

Congratulations to everyone else!

Desautels is one of the top business schools in Canada and students get placements across Canada. Without a knowledge of French a job in Montreal would be unlikely though.

Desautels has its own career center.

Thanks Tom. Very useful.
