He hopes to return to California after graduation. We speak French at home so language is not a problem for internships. Obviously I know about it’s stellar reputation but would west coast enployers?
First of all, congratulations! Secondly, are you a Canadian citizen?
Not sure about that being an East Coast person myself. Major employers and Silicon Valley companies would know McGill.
Microsoft for sure!
Thanks yes that’s what I think too.
I live 15 minutes from San Francisco In an affluent community where people work at higher levels in SF and Silicon Valley and McGill is well known. I am not sure if they will attend but a handful of kids applied there.
Thanks. We’re American, but my son is interested in living and working outside of the US.
I was unaware of McGill offering aid to American students outside of entrance/major scholarships. Was it in your portal somewhere?
It’s called Entrance Bursary or something like that, and all international students are eligible. Awards are supposed to be granted based on need.
That’s interesting- do you mind revealing how much they gave?
When international tuition was very low the aid was merit based. now that international tuition is rising need based aid is available. Bursary equals grant. For American applicants:
“U.S. students who wish to apply to the Entrance Bursary Program from the University must submit a CSS Profile in addition to the McGill Minerva aid application.”
I see- thanks for clearing that up!
Thanks that’s good to know. Nobody at my son’s school has ever applied to McGill (per Naviance) I personally think very highly of the school and would have no issues sending him there. I also would like him to experience living in Montreal, which is where I grew up. He also has family there.
Question for you tom about grading. Have heard it’s very different than the US where oh so many kids are getting As after As. My D thinks that a potentially lower GPAs may impact her grad school options in the states. My sense is that McGill is known and it wouldn’t be a factor. Thoughts? And thank you for becoming the sage advisor on here!
McGill and the other top Canadian universities have the reputation for “grade deflation”. That is not unique to Canadian schools of course. Boston University also has that reputation. I would say that at McGill there are no easy A’s. At all universities some students have an issue with adapting to the independence of college life. Some get too deeply into the party scene. For most that gets corrected after first semester. If the student does the work they will get a good grade.
Has anyone gotten their housing status? I was just accepted a few days ago, and haven’t seen anything even though it’s only supposed to be a waiting period of 24 hours after you get your decision.
I emailed housing and they told me housing selection opens the week of April 13th.
Not sure if they are released all at once, but my Minerva updated with Major Renewable Entrance Scholarship information yesterday.
Hi! My status is “Reviewed - Decision Pending.” What does this mean? Do you think it is a good or bad indicator of my decision? thank youuu
Hello there! My app changed to “Reviewed - Decision Pending” as well. According to the McGill website, this means that your application is less competitive than those already admitted but more competitive than those already rejected (“grey zone”). I was ultimately admitted a month after mine changed to “Reviewed - Decision Pending”. Good luck!!
