When I opened it it said “Admitted pending final results” but before then it said “Ready for review.” Very anticlimactic haha but there was also a pdf link next to it that I could open to view the actual acceptance letter.
All acceptances will say “pending final results”. You must graduate high school and, like at all universities, extreme senioritis (all D’s for example) could lead to a rescission.
Email acceptances do feel very anti-climatic…I hope you were still super excited!
There is a link in the email to the website.
I know, it just seems to lack the old school “rip the letter open” exciting vibe.
I have printed any acceptances out just to have something “tangible”…lol!!
What? No confetti? I’d call it the culture shock, chapter 1.
Congratulations from the OP! I no longer contribute to this forum because, after much consideration, we went with a different option but I admire those who decided to attend McGill.
Actually the vast majority of US colleges release decisions online with a follow-up paper mailing a few weeks later.
She has not had any US ones yet.
Please follow @mcgilluni2025 on Instagram to meet future McGill classmates! Thanks. Congratulations on your acceptance.
My son is struggling whether to apply to McGill or not. It’s a nice school, while it seems not much cheaper in tuition. Can you share anything compelling? Thanks a lot.
Is he a US citizen, or any ties to Canada?
US citizen. It appears very competitive everywhere this year. Going north might not be a bad option, but we just want to learn a little more before the application.
Do you have specific questions? There are some on this forum that have kids currently there who know a lot about the school and how it compares to other top US schools.
We did some search but it’s still not very clear about the difference between the education systems. For a student from the US, does it take a lot to adjust? How well is the school recognized in the US? My son is interested in a pre-med track, and likely will return to the US for a medical school. He got accepted at U. Wisconsin at Madison so far. How does it compare to McGill? Sorry for being too general.
Well McGill is highly regarded especially its medical school so I would expect an undergrad degree would be looked at highly when applying to medical school in the US. As far as Canadian schools McGill is recognized internationally along with univ of Toronto and univ if British Columbia as a top three in Canada and all three in the top 50 in the world I believe. Montreal is supposed to be a great college town and city… we are dual citizens so expense-wise it’s a great education for a great price. Competitive though so we will see- we are still waiting to here.
Global world ranking for McGill is 31 and university of Wisconsin 65.
Thanks for info. Indeed, McGill is highly regarded globally. One plus is that my son has been learning French since middle school, so Montreal might be a nice place to put the learning in use. I guess it’s equally cold as Madison, so it’s not a problem
Is the quality of undergraduate education comparable?
Academically McGill is a very highly regarded school worldwide. Graduate and professional schools In the US are quite familiar with its standing. I would say that McGill is at least comparable to Wisconsin/UCLA/Michigan. It is well known in the northeast and mid-Atlantic states.
The academics are rigorous and there is no “hand holding”. Assistance is available but it is up to the student to seek it out. Campus life however is very different from most US universities. After first year all students live off campus. The drinking age in Quebec is 18. Athletics and Greek life exist but are a small part of campus life. There is no need to get a fake ID or sneak alcohol into a dorm.
McGill is literally in the middle of downtown Montreal yet it is not a “concrete campus”. The city is an amazing place to spend four years.
McGill is definitely a good school, although it depends on the experience you want to have. I love its location but indeed the city of Montreal is really cold during winters. But if you don’t mind spending a few months in the snowy weather of Québec you should absolutely consider Mcgill. It’s the best university in Montreal, top 3 in Canada (along with UofT and UBC).
However, if you are looking for a pure ‘American atmosphere’ with lots of sports and crazy infrastructures, you’d much rather go to UMich, Northwestern, or any other state university with great football. Don’t get me wrong, McGill has an amazing campus, it is just not really comparable to some top US ‘public Ivys’. You’ll still enjoy a decent football culture in Montreal but don’t expect to meet the future Tom Brady there, it’s not really the vibe.
That being said, McGill and the city of Montreal have so much more to offer. From the unique music scene to the welcoming population, there are plenty of reasons that make McGill a top choice for anyone willing to meet international students. Also, be aware that McGill costs about half as much as most US colleges! And if you love hockey and skiing, McGill has really strong teams in these sports!
So yeah, you should definitely give McGill a shot especially if you are looking for an international experience in the vibrant city of Montreal. McGill is awesome and when you look at its rankings, it constantly ranks among the best schools in the world. I’d say that it can be compared, in terms of academic excellence, to schools like Boston University, UCLA, or even Michigan, the experience will be quite different though…
I have applied to McGill in mid-November: Desautels Faculty of Management as my first choice, Faculty of Arts as my second. I am still waiting for a decision and hope to get one soon. Don’t hesitate if you have any questions!
