McGill University vs. University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

Hi, I am a Canadian high-school student who is currently accepted to McGill University and the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor. I plan to major in some sort of biological science. I would like to take into account academics, campus, and the overall setting of the university (ie. McGill is in Montreal, Quebec while the University of Michigan is in Ann Arbor, Michigan). I know a lot more about McGill than I do about the University of Michigan (I practically know nothing about it actually :P). I really need advice so any help in choosing a university would be greatly appreciated. Thanx a lot.

UM is a bit better for ug but might cost much more.

You should make a trip to Ann Arbor before you decide to go there. I think you'd enjoy the overall campus feeling at Michigan over McGill. Besides, everyone speaks english there without a french canadian accent. Not that there's anything wrong with that! ;-)

Easy question. McGill university! It is the 12th best university in the world according to the most well respected ranking Time QS University Rankings. U of M didn't even make top 50!

The Times rankings are CRAP. Total CRAP. The SJTU Rankings are much more widely respected around the globe. One of the times main ranking surveys gad a 1% response rate. That's a joke and so are they.

McGill, simply because it is cheaper, equal quality and Montreal owns...

Academically they are both excellent. McGill is very highly regarded in the Biological and Medical Sciences. I can imagine that McGill will cost a lot less than Michigan. Unless your parents can afford the difference without too much trouble, I would say go for McGill.

Otherwise, go for fit. Here are a few ways in which they are different:

1) McGill is located in the heart of an awesome large city. Michigan is located in the heart of an awesome college town. Both Ann Arbor and Montreal are awesome, but they are totally different.

2) Michigan is a quintiscential American campus. Large, spirited, well maintained, with new, world class facilities and labs. A small part of campus spirit at the University of Michigan is owed to its excellent and tradition-rich athletics programs, particularly Football and Hockey. McGill buildings tend to be older and not quite as well maintained. Given the size and energy of Montreal, the city takes away from the campus. In short, if you care more about the campus, Michigan has the edge. On the other hand, if you give preference to the city around the campus, I would give the edge to McGill.

3) Financially, Michigan is significantly wealthier than McGill. Michigan's endowment is roughly 7 times larger than McGill's. This allows Michigan more manoeuvrability.

Academically, they are both powerhouses, but Michigan is probably a little more well-rounded. If money isn't an issue, I would recommend you go for fit. But if money is an issue, I say go for McGill.

It depends on whether you prefer the American or British education system. At the university level, they are quite different.
