i've been accepted to michigan and am pretty sure that i will be accepted to mcgill. these are basically my two top choices as of now (unless i get into uva or maybe washu....idk)

soo why should i choose mcgill over michigan? obviously the cost is a huge factor weighing in mcgill's favor, but i feel that michigan might have mcgill beat a little in terms of academics. i'm not sure what i want to study, btw

so can anyone give me their opinion of mcgill versus michigan in terms of academics, social scene, people, etccc? thanks!

I am assunning that you are American and out of state for Michigan. A big factor is what kind of environment are you looking for: college town or big city? Ann Arbor and Montr

Michigan is a better school academically, maybe only marginally.

mcgill is cheaper, you get tons of clubbing and partying in montreal than ann arbor. But that is about it for mcgill.

Michigan and McGill are both excellent schools. I’m considering them both too, actually.

I found that they’re pretty academically similar. I know rankings should be taken with a grain of salt, but for what it’s worth, they’re only 3 apart in World Rankings by US News.

If you haven’t already, look at how the specific program you’re planning to enter compares at each school. If Michigan is eons above McGill in terms of your major/program, that could justify the extra $20,000+.

Social scene…there’s going to be partying at both. At Michigan, it will mostly be house parties. At McGill there’s bars, clubbing, etc because of the lower drinking age. Of course if you’re not into partying, the social opportunities at each will probably be equal. Also, Greek life is pretty big at Michigan and nonexistent at McGill.
Sports don’t seem to be a big deal at McGill like they are at American schools. If you’re looking to be in a huge, wild, and pumped up crowd at a football game, I’d go for Michigan.

I agree with what tomofboston said in regards to Ann Arbor And Montreal. Both are very very cool places. But you’ll definitely see more diversity at McGill; Michigan is one of the most expensive public schools for OOS kids and it’s harder for them to get in, so you’ll be surrounded by mostly Michigan residents.

If you’re looking to get a job, you’ll be limited to on-campus ones at McGill unless you speak French as well.

As I said, I’m looking at them both too, and that’s what I’ve gathered from my research. In the end, it’s down to what seems like the right fit to you. Definitely tour them both if you haven’t already!

thanks for your replies…really helpful!

i guess i will have to visit and see…i will be visting michigan for the campus day in february and will visit mcgill if i get accepted, so either in march or april. hopefully that’ll help make my decision easierr!
