McGill's Medical Program

I've been looking into McGill lately and I'm really confused, at first I was looking into it for undergrad and wanted to make sure that I would be able to go to a US med school after (currently live in the US). After looking into it, it looks like they have a 5-year MD program, where the first year you do science stuff, and then the next 4 years you work to get an MD. Can anyone clarify if I was reading it right, and also would that MD allow you to then get a residency in the US?

As I presume, Mcgill has a tough and competitive environment. It is a huge school and intro courses will harbour about 600 students in a lecture class alone. I was in the same position as you were for undergrad, but I opted out because of the huge class size. Yes, it is a top TOP school for medicine, but its premed program did not appeal to me. I would highly recommend that you visit Montreal yourself because different ppl have different opinions.

I’m interested in this program as well. I live in Iowa, but I have Dual Citizenship because I was born in Montreal. Is it at all possible to do this program from the US? How do you apply?

I think you are misunderstanding that the program is a type of premed program that evolves straight into a medical school after a year.

Yea, I did some more reading and they want you to have gone to junior college or something like that in Canada BEFORE the 5 year program.

I’m actually there right now, haha.

I actually like Montreal so far, and am checking out McGill sometime in the next week. Are you saying that it’s a bad option for pre-med only? like a 4 year undergrad major? or is it just as good as any other school?

To be concise, Mcgill is PHENOMENOL. I won’t have enough good things to describe how great it is. BUT, for pre-med, I just think that there seems to be a lot of competition because canadian unis such as Mcgill have a lot of students. Also, it has a pretty international community. You have competition with almost everyone from around the world and even canadian provinces.
Anyways, how do YOU like Montreal so far? Isn’t it just the best season over there? I love how it’s kind of fall-like-season when in u.s. it is extremely warm (although some places in canada are also heating up).

It’s really nice, the weather is a little cold for me (it’s nice now, but in the winter…). Montreal is great, there are tons of stores but it isn’t too big of a city. The only thing I would say bad about it is how much smoking there is, I’m hoping that when we are on the McGill campus there is less. I’m just starting the college process so I’m trying to determine whether or not it will be added to my list of potential schools. So far big hits are Cornell, Vanderbilt, UVA, UMich, and Duke. From what I can tell McGill is easier to get into than most of all of these, so it seems to me that I would be more competitive in my classes than I would otherwise. I also notice that McGill seems to have a lower average GPA than these colleges to the factors would most likely even out. I could be wrong so if you know better then let me know.

p.s. One thing I forgot to mention before is tonight and for the next 3 nights they have a fashion show going on in the middle of town right by McGill and there were a ton of people there, it was kind of like a party and they were handing out free beer and a ton of other stuff. If stuff like that goes on a lot it would definitely be a plus in my book.

Mcgill is harvard of canada lol, so I wouldn’t be surprised that it is that great. I am def going to apply there for med school because it is an awesome place…but then canadian med admission is even tougher due to the low number of med schools in the first place. I would like to add that their gpa is lower b/c canadian high schools grade a lot tougher than the grading here. I don’t know if they will recalculate your gpa because an 85 for them isn’t a bar for getting B, I think you can have 80 and still have a B. That is one thing that you should ask because then your gpa could be much higher HA :). The tougher system is obviously due to no SAT/ACT/AP/IB requirement. Although, I wouldn’t completely null out IB, because that is actually popular there in my opinion.
