Which one do you think is better, PA to Ross @ UMich, or McIntire at UVA? Why?

Also, is it hard to get into McIntire? I have a guaranteed spot at Ross, but not one at McIntire.

More in general, what do you think the major differences are in the overall colleges? Is UVA less of a "rah rah" type of atmosphere in comparison to UMich?

I personally don't want to go to a large university, so at UVA, do you think the large size is alienating? Is there a subculture/community of business students? How would you rate the overall intellectual level of students (what people discuss)?

How about in comparison to Emory or Wash U or UChicago?

I know this is the UVA forum so I'll get biased answers, but I appreciate learning more about the school. Both Ross and McIntire intrigue me, but I never thought of myself going to a large university.

FWIW, I went to UVA years ago with every intention of going to the Comm school (ie. School of Commerce). As my school’s valedictorian with a lot of drive, I didn’t have any doubt that I’d get accepted there when it came to apply 2nd year. Surprise, surprise – after a year or so at UVA, not only did I discover a love for anthropology, of all things, but also a growing interest in being an English major. This dovetailed nicely with a distinct lack of success in pre-comm courses, so it was with not too much disappointment that I did not get accepted. I saved the rejection letter in my scrapbook because it was the first time in my young life I hadn’t gotten what I thought I wanted.

Long story short, if you know FOR SURE that your passion is business, maybe you should go for the sure thing. If you’re open to other experiences, perhaps you don’t want to be locked into a business program.

The bird in the hand is always going back to one school or the other for your MBA…

I’m not 100% about business. I enjoy Econ, Math, Philosophy, and even a bit of Film Study.

This is one of the main reasons I place UVA higher than UMich, because I feel their liberal arts school overall is much better.

Could you comment on the atmosphere though? I’m curious to get as many opinions as possible about the schools so I can decide where I’d fit in the most.

The biggest thing is that you are comparing IF you get into McIntire vs. GUARANTEED IN Ross. I have had many friends go to UVa wanting to get into McIntire, but many of them failed to get in because college was such a huge jump from high school for them in terms of work which resulted in their GPA not being good enough to get in. I believe McIntire has around a 50% acceptance rate. In terms of the academics of both business schools, both are almost equally prestigious, however, I believe Ross and Michigan in general has a larger Alumni network. Personally, I think PA to Ross is better because you are guaranteed in the business program.

The general perception of atmosphere at UVa is much like you’ve probably heard. Lots of “preppy-dressed” people. Guys in salmon shorts and polos, girls wearing sundresses and pearls. I’m sure you’ve heard of the “Guys in ties, girls in pearls” dress attire for football games. Not too sure about the atmosphere at UMich as I have never visited. I do know much about UVa though since I grew up in Charlottesville.

Oh, and one last thing about the second to last thing you said in your original post. Definitely UChicago if you are choosing between all. The economics program there is #1 in the country.

Re. UChicago, their students like to call it “the place where fun comes to die.” (CC won’t let me link to a competing site, so look up the University of Chicago on Uni-go’s site – but without the dash – and read their student reviews.)

If that’s a stereotype they’re proud of, I think that says it all.

McIntire’s offer rate is usually 65%-70%. :)

Remember that there are 14,000 students at UVa. There are all sorts of people. “Guys in ties and girls in pearls” is not as strong a tradition as it used to be. I think the “sea of orange” is more prevalent in the student section these days.

Would you say that statistic is based on the fact that the pool of students who apply to McIntire is in itself very strong? Or are the requirements to get in not that high?

To answer your question Drose, they say that Mcintire rejects kids with 3.8s every year because they look at more than just GPA. I remember hearing figures around 3.6-3.7 being the average GPA for admittance to McIntire however success in the prereqs are important.

Per the McIntire blog:
‘The students admitted thus far achieved an average cumulative UVA GPA at UVA of 3.73 and an average prerequisite GPA of 3.70. They also demonstrated exceptionally strong leadership, community service, and co-curricular activities.’
