Hi - Asking any current UVA/Comm school students or grads for their opinion. Son is deciding above and my concern is his chance for McIntire . He has minimal HS language background - so will probably need to take 3 semesters to meet language requirement. Also, no programming courses. Would the scheduling of language classes, all Comm prereqs, computer and the recommended EC, leadership and work experiences be almost insurmountable? Would he be at a disadvantage as an applicant compared to students who are coming to UVA with language and an AP Computer class already completed?

also stuck on this decision except with Duke & UChicago mixed in. I would like to know how much do business week rankings matter becaues Mendoza #1 vs McIntire #2 vs McDonough #14 would make people automatically assume to toss Georgetown out of the equation…

Agree, that is my son’s issue. He just visited Georgetown for GAAP weekend and ranking was not addressed. He wonders if DC might lend itself to more internship possibilities, etc.

I can tell you that the Georgetown McDonough School of Business undergraduate program is hard to beat in terms of reputation on Wall Street and graduate/professional schools. My sister graduated from Georgetown MSB, was actively recruited and received 6 offers from prestigious Wall Street firms/banks and took a position with the JP Morgan/Chase leadership training program. The Georgetown alumni network is second to none in terms of supporting students/alumni in obtaining internships and positions (both in DC and in NYC–there is a special group of the alumni association known as the “Wall Street Alliance” which is particularly helpful for business students). Georgetown is always ranked lower than its actual prestige and reputation due to its undergraduate emphasis, emphasis on teaching and not research, its low endowment relative to peer institutions, and its faculty/curricula being more “real-world focused” as oppose to “ivory-tower” oriented. Finally, Georgetown and DC provides the best of all worlds in terms of student life and resources–an incredible campus in a fantastic college town with all of the academic, social, cultural, and professional resources of Washington, DC at the students’ disposal–that is truly something that UVA, Notre Dame, Duke, etc. can’t offer.

^that is very helpful medman to both me and az1001. But it cannot be said that McIntire suffers from prestige problems or recruiting in general. The general question that the OP asked is also significant to me…does taking computer + language make future McIntire applicants at a disadvantage?

At Days on the Lawn, it was recommended that those interested in Finance have a programming course and suggested that it would be useful overall prior to entry to McIntire.

My son is trying to determine how he can best position himself for his McIntire application and is still concerned that , given his HS background, it may be next-to-impossible to take all required prereqs. In particular, he has seen some posts with students stating there are not enough intro language classes. He has an email in to the appropriate department to see if exceptions are made for summer language at other insitutions.
