McIntite double Major?

Hi,

I was recently accepted at UVA and I plan on attending next year! I hope to enroll in the McIntire school in my third year, but I am also very interested in studying computer science. I was wondering of it is feasible to double major in these two areas within four years. I should be coming to UVA with some credits from AP courses. I was wondering if anyone had experience in this area. Thanks!

There are students who are able to complete a major before moving into McIntire as third years. It isn’t easy, but having a good amount of credit from AP/IB/DE would help.

It is not very likely to be able to finish a computer science major in 2 years, even if you have credit for the first two CS courses, usually it takes people 2 years just to do prereqs for the major. You could do a minor though.

I suspected that comp sci would be a problem! I have heard that it is a very difficult major. As long as I can minor in it I would be happy.

I know one person who finished his CS major before entering McIntire and another who will complete his by graduation.

It is a little difficult for McIntire students to double major (especially in non-related subjects like CS) because their third year is almost entirely spoken for via the ICE curriculum (15 credits in the fall, 9 credits in the spring). Similar subjects like Econ and languages are a bit easier because of overlap with pre-reqs & AP credit.

However, many people do double major with help from AP credits, J-term/May-term/summer classes, etc. You may not finish up the second major until second semester of fourth year but it can be done. I know someone who has to take five math classes next year to finish his math major.
