Md/mba

What types of courses did those of you who did, or are planning on potentially doing, the MD/MBA program take, are taking, or plan on taking, in your undergrad?

How beneficial is an MD/MBA?

at BU, the md/mba basically consists of doing the first 2 years of med school and taking step 1, then going to the school of management for a year to get your mba, then doing the last 2 years of med school. im not doing it, but im sure that the program can be beneficial, as well as the md/mph. owning a practice is essentially like running a business which is why it wouldn’t be a bad idea to do it. however, in my case, i have been working at the same practice for 5 years and my mentor has basically educated me on the business of medicine. my conclusion is…i will hire an office manager to do everything on that end lol.

for example - do I need to take business courses in my undergrad if I plan on an md/mba?
- if so, which ones (macro/micro econ, internation business, health economics, stocks, etc.)?

MBA is a piece of paper to help you get a job. Not worth the time or money to help you run a practice. If you want to learn some MBA jargon you can just get a couple of good books. An accounting class can also help you learn some useful concepts. You can always hire experienced consultants for advice.

probably more beneficial later in your career if you do some administrative work. otherwise, likely not worth it. sounds like you’ve already gotten some okay answers. best of luck… btw, SDN might be a better place for this…
