Me at Columbia, Yale, Princeton?

The dreaded chance thread. I always wondered if it would actually come to this :D

Academics:
-GPA=4.404 W, maybe 3.98 UW
-SAT I=690 CR, 770 M, 780 W
-SAT II=780 Literature, 660 Math 2, 660 US History (kind of dismal on the second two, but I'm convinced I can do much better when I retake them)
-Class rank 4/342
-AP scores=European History 5, World History 5
-Currently full IB diploma candidate, haven't taken any tests yet and don't expect to do very well on them since the program is fairly new at our school

ECs:
-Harp playing (9,10,11,12)=very important to me. I play in the local youth orchestra, occasionally get hired to play weddings, attend harp summer camps, and raised some money for charity this Christmas by playing in local malls
-Tutoring at elementary school(9,10,11,12)=2 or 3 days a week, had to restart the program in 11th grade after its sponsor shut down
-Piano (9,10,11,12)=good but not excellent
-Church Band/Youth Group(11,12)=keyboardist in chief!
-Robotics club(11,12)=Saftey Cap'n
-Cross Country(12)=I'm not very good at this sport, but I am enjoy it
-Key Club(12)
-Track(9)

The rather obvious problem with the EC's is that it seems like a laundry list...I'm also considering joining drama club, but I'm worried it will look like I'm just trying to tack something else on my resume. Between you and me, though, I really want to be in all these activities.

Awards:
-NHS(11,12)=not really that big an honor at my school
-Academic letter

Summer Activities:
-Harp camp (11,12)
-Earthwatch SCAP(12)=natural science all expenses paid student camp
-Girls State(12)
-Orchestra camp(11)

This looks unfocused again...but I just wanted to try some new things!

Random "Tips":
-I live in a less populous state on the opposite coast of most of these schools. I'm a bit too paranoid to name it specifically, but...I'd guess they don't get too many applicants from my neck of the woods
-I a girl and I want to major in statistics. Now that seems uncommon and special right there, doesn't it?

Schools I want to get into:
-Columbia
-Yale
-Princeton
-U Chicago
-Northwestern
-Boston U
-Oberlin C

I have a few I'm more confident I can get into, but any other suggestions would be great. Thanks for any input! :D

Your awards are quite weak compared to everyone who will be applying to those schools. Also, you really really need to improve those SAT II’s. Your SAT I is fine, except your critical reading IS a little low for these schools (I got the same score :[ ). Your E.C.'s are solid, but lacking a little connectivity. You’re GPA/rank is very good though and just work on those parts of your app., along with your essay and such and you could have a chance.

currently, your chances look very slim. Please find ways to beef up ur ECAs

IMO, you seem perfectly qualified. Your grades are good, your test scores should end up where you want them, and you seem very focused on the harp and piano, which isn’t extremely unique, but it’s still fairly good. I like giving percent chances, but I’m really not an expert by any means, so take these with a grain of salt:

-Columbia: 25%
-Yale: 10%
-Princeton: 15%
-U Chicago: 40%
-Northwestern: 45%
-Boston U: 75%
-Oberlin C: 75%

And yes, it’s very arbitrary.
The competitiveness of your school will make a big difference.

Thanks, guys! Sirensong, that’s a little horrifying, but I appreciate it a lot. I’m not quite sure how I could get more awards besides just sitting around and achieving…I’m hoping to get something out of National Merit, but we’ll see about that. And I don’t really see myself “beefing up” my ECs (I could barely handle it all last year!) but thanks for the input.

Wow, looking back on that it does seem quite horrifying…sorry about that. Maybe add 10% to each except for Boston U & Oberlin C. But just the fact that I’m suggesting that shows you how BS my predictions are.

Really need to up the CR, with a 780 in lit, it shouldn’t be hard with practice.

Sirensong, I like it! Haha and I know never to take these things too seriously
hmom5, I’m retaking the test and think I can do better on it…but is it really possible practice? I’m always skeptical about these things. Thanks for the encouragement!

yeah, the last 5 ecs make it seem like you were in a panic to tack on ECs for college. I don’t think you have a great shot at yale, princeton or columbia but everything else is alright

hm…jubilant, do you think I would be better off if I actually left these off my application?

I would definitely leave Church Band/Youth Group, since it ties in with your music passion. The robotics thing is decent, but I would leave it, it’s really not going to hurt anything. It’s nice to have some sports on there, even though you obviously don’t care too much about them. And key club probably won’t help you, delete it if you don’t have extra space.

hey, thanks for chancing me!!
and lol. i guess i shouldnt really be chancing you since in 2010 too lol

anyways, i think maybe stick to one instrument and perfect it. also you need something more academic to complement your music interests and as sirensong said, you could highlight your robotics participation. and you could leave out some clubs you joined late in high school b/c they dont really show commitment to one particular activity

-Columbia: reach
-Yale: high reach
-Princeton: high reach
-U Chicago: high reach/reach
-Northwestern: reach
-Boston U: match/slight reach
-Oberlin C: match/slight reach

you should definitely get a safety, or a couple more matches.
but other than that, you’re all good!!~~

harp is a good hook

Yale and Princeton will be a bit more of a crapshoot, but I think you stand a very good chance at Columbia, Chicago, Northwestern, etc.

Northwestern…definitely in.

Not to sure about Yale and Princeton, but I think you have a solid chance, work hard on the essay’s if they have any!

Great to hear all the positive thoughts! Selecturm, I was hoping harp would be a good hook (except at Oberlin, which attracts them like the plague…). So then I’ll definitely not mention key club. Highlight the robotics (shouldn’t hurt if I end up being captain this year :D).

This is actually getting me really excited for admissions! I’ve got a few more safeties, but I’d love to go to any of these schools! <3

-Columbia - high match low reach
-Yale - reach
-Princeton - reach
-U Chicago - match
-Northwestern - match
-Boston U- match
-Oberlin C - match

Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/765295-there-any-chance-i-can-get-into-brown-cornell.html</a> :D

Are you applying to the conservatory at Oberlin or the college (or both)? While the college may be easier to get into than an Ivy League school, to attend the conservatory for harp performance would be incredibly competitive; perhaps as or more competitive than an Ivy League.

wirte about your love for music in your essay

theorygeek-lol I’d love to study harp with Yolanda at Oberlin, but I’m pretty sure I could never get in. I figured I’d just apply as a college, and maybe study harp with one of the grad students there.
I was considering writing about music in my essay, but I figured it might be a little cliche…and anyway, I already did it in my “elaborate on an activity” section.
