How much is drinking/partying a part of the campus culture at Brown? Thanks a lot!

if you no like drinkie school then you no like any school

people drink everywhere for whatever reasons... but you arnt really pressured to do it. i havnt taken a sip, a shot, a drink, or a gulp... of any alchohol this semester and its been fine.

You won't be pressured, but it's around. If you can't stand to be around alcohol then go to Bringham Young. It's going to be everywhere you go. Keeney wreaks of alcohol and pot by 6pm on any given Friday. There are plenty of activities around that don't involve alcohol, but it's there before hand and afterwards. That's been my experience. I have never been a big drinker/fan of drinking and I see my fair share, but it doesn't bother me. People are respectful and tolerant. If you are as well, no problem.

Quoted for hilarity. Well done, Lucy.

Anyway, I don't see drinking to be a big thing on the Brown campus itself, but moreso the surrounding area. There's plenty of good bars around campus, so I'm certain you can stay on campus and avoid everything, as crumflake said.
Yes, to reinforce, people are very tolerant. I've been to a few parties where people aren't drinking and it's not like anyone is forcing alcohol down their throats. It's not Tulane :)

But I mean... if one were to say, want to obtain alcohol, how easy would this be?

extremely. a non-issue i'd say.

A non-issue is practically an understatement. A ****ty ID that wasn't made on campus (they know specifically what to look for on those and get in trouble if they don't check those out) will almost always work. Most of the time you won't get ID'd at all. RCs can go to either end with the drinking in the hall but overall the rules are not enforcement and more safety. Brown is going to give you a lot of responsibility. One of them is knowing how to be safe and keep your friends safe. They'll provide you with everything necessary to have a safe evening, and even quite a large safety net in case you want to take part in illegal activities and things go south. If you are real sick, EMS has it's own Brown University ambulances-- no cops involved, no parents involved, etc. There is no reason not to call if someone is in danger, and that's why Brown has it set up that way.

Be responsible, but you can party either way.

It's extremely easy to get alcohol here and a lot of people party if that's what you want, but I haven't touched it since I came here and haven't felt pressured at all.

correlation: cc posting and not drinking

strangely this doesn't come as a surprise

Don't mind amor....he's a cool guy (who happens to like the svenska)

It's true. This is not a good representation of Brown students.

We like to drink, most of us do at least.

I enjoy it myself, though not to the extent most people think of college drinking. Finished a final and having a drink with my roommate now before he goes home actually...

Yeah, I'd agree with pretty much everything everyone has said.

You like alcohol? Great! This is probably the only place of anywhere near its combination of academic stature and size where rules about alcohol are this lax-ly enforced.

You don't like alcohol? Great! You'll find that those who do will not force you to do anything, and that you'll still be able to have a ton of fun.

I have very close friends on both ends of the spectrum, and it all works out very well.

We are ever true to Brown,
For we love our college dear,
And wherever we may go (where are we going?)
We are ready with a beer.
And the people always say (what do they say?)
That you can't out drink Brown men (and women!)
With a scotch and rye and a whiskey dry,
And a B-O-U-R-B-O-N

"Keeney wreaks of alcohol and pot by 6pm on any given Friday."

Do alot of Brown students smoke pot? I don't mind alcohol (I'm all for it actually) but I truly HATE the smell of pot.

A number of kids do smoke pot, but it's not ridiculous. You can always be in substance free housing, but it's really not necessary as long as your roommate doesn't smoke.

You hate the smell of pot? Even my friends who don't smoke like the smell. It always reminds me of happy people! If it really bothers you though, sub-free might be a good option.

Urgh... but sub-free seems...so... not fun.

felixfelicis -- are you a Brown student? Although sub-free housing has a bad rep at other schools, the freshmen sub-free freshman unit at Brown this year probably has more fun than anyone else. I have a bunch of friends there, and they are all so high on life, it's ridiculous.

I was accepted to Brown this year, though I never visited the school before. What's the social scene like at Brown? I heard that it isn't the type of frat-party/mainstream social scene like at other schools...
