Hey everyone-

I'm going to be a sophomore at Tulane this fall and I'm not sure exactly where I'm living. Definitely on campus somewhere. I was curious if I could get some guidance on a meal plan...I'm a girl, so not a male athlete eater by any means. Also, last year, I didn't find myself going to the dining hall for breakfast more than 5 times the whole year, I usually ate something in my room. Just trying to decide what a reasonable option would be, I don't want to go over board but I also don't want to be lacking in swipes!

Just so everyone else is clear, @CTransfer2017 is, as the screen name implies, a transfer into Tulane this year. So the dining hall she is talking about was at another school.

I am not so familiar with the current meal plans and rather than me looking them up, it would be better for current students or their parents to comment, I think. Or those of incoming freshmen that have already looked at this. They are in the same boat as you, pretty much.

BTW, where you are living has no impact on the choice of meal plan at Tulane. Not only is there only one dining hall, but the campus is compact enough that location of the dorm doesn’t really matter much anyway. But, as we talked about in another thread, if you do end up in Irby or Phelps, which is where a lot of the transfer students are placed, you would be right next to Bruff. It is possible that by your senior year the new hall will be open and that puts it a short block to 1.5 blocks away from those dorms.

If your plan works the same way as the incoming freshman plan there are several plans but they all cost the same amount. It just seemed logical to me to get the unlimited swipes at Bruff. With less swipes you get more $$ to use at the food court, but it was only about $75 more at the food court, however then it would limit the number of Bruff swipes.

@DebmomNY I actually get the same options as all other sophomores!

Are the options that different? I am being lazy, I could look them up. But tell me anyway.

All meal plans are $2675

Unlimited swipes at Bruff
$250 wave$
$25 Nola$

or

Unlimited swipes at Bruff
$275 wave$

or

15 weekly meals
- 50 extra meals
$325 wave$
$25 Nola$

I believe wave$ are used at the food court and Nola$ at a couple of local restaurants.

Oh, sorry DebmomNY. I meant between freshman and sophs are the plans and/or options very different.

You are right about Wave$ vs. Nola$, although it used to be more than a couple of local restaurants. More like a couple of dozen. Might have changed.

There is still a petty nice amount of restaurants that take NOLA $

Sophomores have more options - it’s easier to post the link than list them. <a href=“Tulane Dining Services”>Tulane Dining Services; I think for freshmen, the unlimited is a good option for the added social opportunities. My D is debating as a sophomore whether to get 10 or 15 meals a week. She wants more wavebucks to spend to spend on campus. And you are right fc, there are 2 dozen restaurants off campus to use nolabucks on Tulane Dining Services;

I did flex 350 (15/week with 325 wavebucks) for both semesters and do not recommend it. It’s just too much bruff.

I would recommend flex 550 or 475. 10 meals per week at bruff seems to be the right amount for sophomores. But since you have to chose one I’d recommend 550 over 475 because you get 75 more wavebucks in exchange for 15 less extra bruff meals, and I don’t know a single person who went through all of their extra bruff meals.

Ok, thanks for the advice everybody! I definitely do not want to have an excessive meal plan…it’s a waste of food and money! I appreciate everyone’s advice. I think I will probably go for 550!
