Ok, if I get 7 meals/week. That means I can eat up to 7 meals at Top of Lenoir or Ramshead. And if I add money to my dining flex account, I can eat at chick-fil-a and subway. And expense does the same thing as flex except you have to pay tax on food?

yes. and you'll need expense to do laundry/make copies/print in color

haha i'm a sophomore and i swear i've explained this to my parents 7 or 8 times in the past week even though they've been through it before..

And I already got my fall semester bill in the mail last week. So if I purchase a meal plan now...Will this semesters meal plan be included in the spring semester bill or does it get added onto the fall semester bill?

Is 150 meals with 100 in flex okay?
or
Is 105 with 200 in flex okay?

150 is way way way too much. I don't know anyone who managed to eat 150. Seriously. Trust me on this. Even if you do go through all your meals, you will have so many friends who haven't who will be more than willing to give you free meals. I say, 105 and 200 in flex. I'm doing 105 with 100 flex, but I won't be here next Spring so it makes sense.

why 105?
People are always on the run?
The food is disgusting?
What's the Ideal plan for a male?

you just seriously won't eat as much as you think you will, i guarantee it.

i got the 150 block plan last year, and it was too much, but, granted, not "way way way too much." this year i'm downgrading to 105. if you're worried about it, go for the 150 for first semester--you can switch down for the spring.

I think the food at lenoir is really good, I just didn't have time to eat there for lunch all the time and first semester made breakfast about three times. Second semester was a different story - I actually ate breakfast pretty regularly, same with lunch, but I felt like 105 felt just right for second and first semester I had something like 30 meals left over, after swiping tons of my friends in. Seriously though, the food itself isn't bad at all.

The food isn't bad at all. It's just that there are so many other places to eat on and around campus and a busy schedule will often mean eating somewhere else.

I got 105 block and I couldn't even use up that.

This year, I'm not getting a meal plan at all. I expect to eat at the dining halls several times a week, but I calculated it would be a lot cheaper for me to pay the "door price" than to have as many unused meals as I had last year...

Trust us on this. 105 meals is PLENTY, and I would strongly advise against getting more. I didn't believe people when they told me this last year--- the math just seemed off--- but it's true: you'll eat less in the dining halls than you expect.

Unless you plan to eat breakfast every day (and you won't) 105 is plenty especially for first semester when there are so many free meals the first few weeks of school. There will be free food at orientation, from clubs trying to get you to join, and rush (many guys attend the rush parties just to eat and drink) where there are serve steak, barbecue etc.

The block plans are better because you can eat the meals any meal/anytime during the semester whereas the x number of meals per week plans force you to eat those meals that week only or you lose them.

You can add dining flex dollars anytime and they carry over to next semester but meals don't. Stay with the 105 meals and $150-200 in flex dollars.

Thought Provoking

My S tried what you are planning during his second semester of sophomore year for the exact reasons. He said it would save money etc just like your calculations are telling you, For what it's worth, it cost us more because he was eating on Franklin St more often and the "door price" in Lenoir really starts to add up. In retrospect he should have either opted for a minimum number of meals and a lot more dining dollars or just really loaded the dining dollar account. I guess if you are really disciplined and closely watch your budget (which he didn't) it might work....good luck with it.

Just my $0.02

Hey Eadad, do you happen to know the answer to my question in post #3?

If I remember correctly, you can still purchase and adjust meal plans during orientation and move-in which I think we did. That was in Aug '04, so things may have changed since then. It would then be adjusted on your fall semester bill I would assume. If you have already paid, any credit would be made toward the spring bill.

Oh, I just called. They said I pay whatever I owe on it now. And I'll get another bill in September with the meal plan charges.

Does anybody have any suggestions for a commuter? I'm planning to be on campus from 8am-4pm everyday. So I calculated for the occasional breakfast and lunch, culminating in a 35meal block plan with $144 flex. But I get one free change before school starts, so I'm looking for some more suggestions and insights.
