Hi, I'm an incoming transfer student living in one of the college town dorms. What do you think would be the best meal plan option for somebody in these dorms? I'm signed up for a west campus meal plan right now, but I'm not sure if a traditional meal plan would be better.

If you only want to eat in a specific building on West, then keep your plan. Otherwise, you should probably switch if you want to eat at Okenshield’s (on Central), and the two places on North as well (RPCC and Appel).

The West campus meal plan limits me to a specific dining hall? Would I get to choose which one?

Blegh. My mistake. You can eat in any building on West, but you can’t eat anywhere outside of West.

would the traditional still be more convenient for a collegetown student?

Probably. I think they also have a debit type dining plan for students who live in Collegetown, which uses primarily Big Red Bucks. A few years ago when my daughter first moved off campus (she actually lived very close to West and the dining halls there) she considered the traditional dining plan, but the person she spoke with in the dining office actually recommended the debit plan because it’s considerably less expensive and you basically only pay for what you use. She eats all of her lunches on campus, and several eateries on campus only take BRBs anyway. If she does go to an all-you-can-eat dining hall for dinner she just uses her BRBs for that as well. And on nights she chooses to eat off campus she has not “wasted” any meals. There’s also “City Bucks” which can be used at certain local restaurants.

I think one of those plans might work better for you, unless you’re sure you want to walk to West for every meal. As far as I know you can always upgrade your meal plan, but you can only downgrade for a week or so after classes start.

But if you want a definite, traditional type of “meal plan”, I would think that a meal plan not specific to West would probably be better as it gives you more flexibility.

I’d say do the traditional… the only people with West Campus Meal Plans are usually those who live on West.
