I just got my housing assignment (double in Rieber!) and I was wondering about the meal plans. I'm not going to be going home on the weekends, so I'm trying to decide between 14P and 19P for food. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I had 14P, went home every weekend, and had a lot of spare swipes at the end of the quarter. 19P is very convenient, but people I knew with 19P and who stayed weekends still weren’t able to use up every swipe by the end of the quarter and had to spend the extra ones on packs of water/Gatorades or swipe in friends. If you intend to eat breakfast every morning then I’d probably go with 19P, the reason I ended up with so many excess swipes is because I typically skipped breakfast and/or lunch (either because running late or on campus all day).

How do you know how many swipes you used up?

If you eat at BruinCafe, Cafe 1919, or Rendezvous you’ll get a receipt which you need to get your food. It should say how many swipes you have left (for premier plans at least). If you’re on a non-premier meal plan you’re restricted to a certain amount of meals per week so you should pretty much know how much you have and plan accordingly.

You can also peer over the cashiers when you swipe into any dining hall or cafe; on the screen your number of swipes remaining will apear.

If we get 19P and decide we don’t need that many swipes can we switch to a different plan after the first quarter?

You can actually switch meal plans any time during the quarter for a fee.

@phospholipase thanks
