meals?

when/how do we select meal plans??

i just finished the housing app and didn't notice any meal plan options.

you select you meal plan when you accept your housing offer and make your initial payment.

i love how we have 5 months before school & you're worried about food already. that's how the fatties do.

Whatever meal plan you select, you can probably count on gaining a bit of weight your freshman year. The food at UCLA is supposed to be about as good as it gets for college fare, and there is plenty of it. And if you are still hungry, you can always go to Diddy Reese. ;)

^ frosh 15 occurs in fall. except if you're on the colorguard like me.
...then it occurs in winter xD

actually, so many people here try to hit the gym and keep in shape, i haven't heard of anyone gaining a significant amount of weight. not saying it won't happen, but as long as you keep active in some way (or even just walk to class and avoid the infamous brownie goo!) you'll be able to maintain your weight. maybe even lose some.
that said, the food IS good here! you'll still get sick of it at some point... but it definitely is good. as is westwood food. and... diddy riese :)

Most people are aware when they gain weight, and it's definitely not the UCLA food to blame for the weight gain.

The food is alright for a month, and it gets boring. But that depends how much you enjoy the slightly unauthenticity in every food made. The first week I came to UCLA, I averaged 6-7 plates per meal. Now I only eat 2-3 plates, and seldomly 2 bowls of cereal because the dining menu sometimes is so terrible!

But Themed Dinner was alright. I ate 12 plates. :)

I don't understand how people do gain 15 pounds when there are so many hills and plenty of opportunities to exercise (even walking to and back from class!).

Westwood food is so expensive, but everyone knows that.

im almost repulsed by dorm food now after nearly 2 years. and i still have another year to go. blahhhh.....

first month or so i ate a lot. maybe like 4 plates? and i finished most of it. now i get like two, mayyybe three things and finish half of each....enough to make me not hungry but not enough to make me truely full.

dont get me wrong, its not nasty food (usually), but you just get tired of it...

What's the typical selection at the dining halls? I tried looking for one on the UCLA website but I couldn't find a menu.

ucla.com then current students then residential dining then dining menu will get you there.
menu will show you the day's dining hall food, and you can also look at the items served in all the specialty restaurants :)

Select the date you want:

I keep changing my mind about the food here but it's really decent overall. As for gaining weight, fall quarter I went crazy and gained like 10 pounds. I had pizza, I had burgers, fries, that ice cream... then winter quarter I got food poisoning from the food so I chilled out, lost the 10 pounds, now my diet at dining hall is still large but consists primarily of apples, bran muffins, chicken breast, hot tea. My main vices are fries and pasta.

Also the stews are disgusting. You know what I mean (generally exhibition food). They take leftover meat from the previous day from peoples plates and mash it together. There's your "Peruvian beef!"

I would say something about the Peruvian beef, but... nah.

My girlfriend (also a UCLA student) and I concur about the Peruvian beef. It has french fries in it.
