Mecklenburg Conservation Internship @SUNY Oneonta

Hey,

I've just been accepted to this summer internship for conservation at SUNY Oneonta!! They will pay me $1500 (up to $1750...) for this.

I was wondering if anyone else has ever had any experience with this program. I'm really surprised I was able to find it and get accepted....after MULTIPLE rejections from EVERY single summer program I applied to...

So anyone else going this year? Know someone who might go? Anyone go in previous years?

Also, how competitive is it? I thought at first it might not be so spectacular given that it's at a college I hadn't heard of before applying and also given that they accepted me (lol)....but if it's a paid deal, it might be pretty nice, right?

Here's a link: SUNY Oneonta Biological Field Station at Cooperstown

On a side note, I got a job at a local tutoring facility. They'll pay me minimum wage, I'd probably work 20 hours/week over the summer. What opportunity would be better for me to pursue given that I aspire to be pre-med and apply to the top tier colleges??

squee! This is crazy! You know they only accepted 2 people last year (one girl and one boy), and I assume it was the same this year (what with money being tight and all), and those two people are HERE (again, assuming they didn't take more than last year)! I got the job too, and I can assure you that the BFS (Biological Field Station), while somewhat rustic, is full of great people, and Otsego Lake is beautiful (and GIANT. I know because I took a class there last summer, and it took us from 20 to 30 minutes by motorboat to get to most of our sites).

I don't know about this year (because they didn't have an interview), but the competition last year was pretty fierce - about 20-22 people came to the group interview for the 2 slots (I had only turned 16 two days before the interview, so I didn't have a prayer). The professors and us were all crammed into a little room made to fit 10 people, and I heard one of them say that they'd have to do something different next (this) year.

^omg no way, i had no idea it was that intense! seriously?? so it's safe to say i'm one of the about two people accepted out of 20-25ish others??

and yeah, it sounds absolutely WONDERFUL...now i just gotta convince my parents to let me go...i live all the way over here on the west coast, haha.

are you planning on doing it, karajanhra?

just wondering, what were your stats...or more importantly i suppose, what schools are you considering applying to? you don't have to be specific, just like what kind?? do most kids who do this internship end up at suny?

Hellz yeah. Of course, I live 30 minutes away. You should know that there's no housing available and you have to be there basically all day for 5 days for 9 weeks, so it might not be the best option for you unless you can afford to rent a place.

If you're doing the internship for prestige, you're in the wrong place. No one's ever heard of SUNY Oneonta unless you (like me) live in its backyard. I'm currently in a pending love affair with a certain Ivy (hint hint: Red's my favorite color); she'll probably break my heart, but I love her still. :)

^lol no i'm not JUST in it for the prestige...i really do care about the environment, and would like to do my part for it. plus, i'd love to go out and conduct actual field research. it's like finally realizing all those childhood dreams!

the only problem is my parents are completely against anything not pre-med...the only way i might be able to make them let me go is if i convince them with the prestige factor, lol.

no housing...that sucks. maybe i can dorm there??

good luck w/the love of your life=)

Lol. And by "prestige factor", you mean "complete lack of prestige factor." It's a great internship, but it's not a national thing (it's intended for New York State students who can commute there).

Nuh-uh. No housing for high school students; it says so specifically on the website. I don't think that the SUNY dorms take high school students (who would want to go there during the summer?), but you can ask.

My last love (TASP) took me to the finals of her dating show and then crushed my soul, so I hesitate to love my Big Red lady. But what NYS resident biology/ecology-major-to-be can resist her?
