How is the medical program at UT? ive heard that the one in Dallas (UTD) is better. If it is, also how is the transfer policy from a UT university to another UT (from UTD to UT)?

hi wonky. if you've looked at the history of these forums, you'll probably find some of my previous posts about premed at UT. well, now that im at UT, and doing premed, let me update my opinion about premed at UT and clarify some details.

First off, UTD and UT have no affliation whatsoever. so if you wanted to transfer, it'll be like transfering to another school - you wont be transfering within the UT system. but im not quite sure how the transfering process works. And yeah, i still think that UTD's premed program is one of the best in texas.

After spending four weeks here in austin, going to orientation, and stuff, i can say that my previous notions of premed at UT were blown away. premed here is actually not that bad. of course, there is still A LOT of competition here because theres SO many premeds. in fact, i finally found out that UT has a 34% marticulation rate to medical schools (remember, all texas med schools reserve 90% of their spots for texas students). where as UTD has roughly a 78% marticulation rate. But again, as i have stated before, this doesnt include those who finally decided not to apply to med school or decided that medicine wasnt for that and "undeclared" themselves as premed. for instance, at UT, after the first year, about half of all the declared premed students "undeclare" themselves as premed (when you go through the orientation process at UT, you have the option to declare yourself as a premed student or not..this helps them identify who is so that they can receive advising in the future). I dont know how this goes on at UTD, but i know that at least at UT, half dont want to do premed anymore after the first year.

so of course, premed is all about the grades+mcat+ECs right? well, grades first off, if you come to UT for premed, you will have to study/work. and in fact, its not that difficult to make A's. All the classes I'm in now, i have professors who dont do class curves, and if they do, they curve the tests upwards, not downwards. not to mention they are all good teachers and fair graders. so, if you're a smart student, and you put in a fair amount of effort in your work, and pick the right professors when choosing classes, then you'll excel at UT grade-wise. remember, UT's gpa scale runs like this: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, etc. whereas at UTD, a 93 is a 4.0, and something below that is like a 3.67, and so on. both scales has its advantages i suppose, but, yeah, just fyi. also, you may want to consider the fact that utd has quite a number of foriegn professors who arent exactly proficient in english, so at times, you may have difficulties understanding during lecture time. although, i dont know which of these professors teach which classes. so you might have to figure that out.

MCAT wise, well, the MCAT is changing up now. now the test is to be taken on computers at the test center. but wherever you go, you'll find adequate help to study/prepare for it.

and finally, remember that half of the premeds at UT drop their premed status. why is that? because they find premed isnt for them. why is that? because people change their minds. so, id like to point out that if you come to UT and you later decide you dont want to do premed or you just want to do something entirely different, UT has a wide variety of majors you can switch into. however, utd doesnt have such a wide selection. so take that into consideration as well.

all in all, this is just my advice. dont take everything to heart. do some of your own research, because all this stuff i just said, i got that from my own research. not to mention that im only a first year student. you'll probably find better advice from an upperclassman. you could try http://forums.studentdoctor.net/ . hope that helps.

and just on a side note, for all you seniors thinking about coming to UT, i hope you know that starting 9/15/06, which was a couple of days ago, UT will not accept grades for AP credit. from now on, you only get credit. so if you got a 3, you get credit, and if you got a 5, you only get credit. no more grades. just fyi.

thanks so much! that really helped. i hadnt really thought about the fact that ut has a lot of other majors just incase i do change my mind. hmmm...

its just that i live in dallas i dont really want to be that close to home and go to UTD... and i knwo im accepted to UT because of the top ten % rule...

im going to have to think more about this...
but thanks for your help i really appreciate it!!
