ive been looking for pre-med programs in texas because i live in texas. however i havent been able to dig up any useful information about UT at austin nor of Baylor. although i have researched and read articles about Baylor, the only other premed program i know that is "good" is Austin College in Sherman (even that i am unsure of) perhaps it is the way im researching but i seem to hit deadends constantly. could anyone help me? what is a good premed program in texas?

try austin college and SMU

i have a safety school, UT, but i dont know if their premedical program is all that great. ive tried looking for information such as percentage admitted to med school, but i havent found anything. austin college is another safety school, but i prefer not to go there. however, i havent visited SMU so i dont know how their campus is like nor have i researched the school as of yet. i will though :)

There is the Rice/Baylor pre-med/med-school program. I don't know what the type of program is, but is where you take all your undergrad stuff at rice and then right after you are admitted into Baylor College of medicine. You have to apply through Rice's interim decision. You should look into it.

rice for sure. cant believe it took until torrestowers to be metioned. haha jeez......

thank u torrestower, ill definately look into it. but i still have the question on University of Texas. since it is going to be one of my safety schools i want to know that it would be a good choice for pre-med. i want to go to baylor, but i dont know if i will be able to afford it if; it depends on the scholarship/grant i receive. how ever, does anyone have any stats? im still looking for a website/book that tells me acceptance percentage to med schools from different colleges, specifically UT, SMU, baylor-basically texas colleges

I've heard A&M's (college station) pre-med program is alot better than UT's.

well, i dont know too much about pre-med programs... but i do know alittle about bs/md programs in texas. rice/baylor... baylor/baylor... texas a&m primary care... and depending on where you live theres three more for south texas, laredo down

I go to Austin College and can give you a little insight about the school.

It is pretty typical of a small liberal arts school, small classes, you get to know your profs by their 1st name and all that jazz. The pre-med curricula is pretty demanding and tends to be a little on the "weed-out" side depending on your ability. Being pre-med is hard core and not a walk in the park. Don't let the admissions numbers fool you into thinking it is an easy school. It is pretty thorough and has the ability to prepare you well for medschool (90% of applicants get in). Classes like Cell Bio, and Ochem are the main players in depleting the number of pre-meds, so the 90% is a little misleading. There is research there, but very little and not very interdisciplinary if that's your walk in the park. You will get a better, more well-rounded educational experience in all realms at AC vs. a school of the magnitude of say UT Austin or another huge state school. The campus is small and has less than 1300 students and can tend to be a little greek-centric depending on your social orientation, but a lot of the people enjoy its intimacy and find their niche on campus quickly. There are several opportunities for leadership positions. There is also an automatic admission to Texas Tech med school affiliation provided that you're a Tx resident, got above 1300 on SAT and maintain certain gpa/science gpa numbers. The financial aid packages there tend to pretty generous and presidential scholarships or the leadership institute are great in paying for a chunk of the bill. They are pretty good about negotiating it. The course offerings are definitely not as diverse as say UT simply because there isn't enough faculty to teach. School spirit is pretty weak. The community is very closely knit though and has a pretty cool lake campus to go and relax at every now and then which is only 25 min drive away. The food isn't so great and the city is pretty dull. This makes it less distracting and easier to focus.

Let me know if there is anything else you wanna know about AC that I missed.

Rice!!!!!!!...then to Baylor!!!

haha srsly.. rice all the way that is if you can get in.. lol..

For a medical school, which matters most, gpa, research, mcat, prestige of undergrad school, and undergrad degree
