Hi! I was recently admitted to both UCF and The Burnett Honors College, and am very interested in the MEDD program. However, I do not quite understand the requirements for the program and if the dual degree is worth it. I am very interested in medical school and in engineering school, but I am not sure of which I would like to pursue, or if I would like to go into biomedical engineering. There isn’t much information on the UCF website on MEDD. I read somewhere that one must achieve either an SAT super score of 1500 or a one-sitting ACT score of 34 to be considered, however I am not sure if these requirements are for MEDD or Burnett Medical Scholars. I currently have a one-sitting ACT score of 33 and an SAT super score of 1480. I think that I can get my scores up by February if needed, but I do not want to take either test again unless it is absolutely necessary. Any information would be greatly appreciated, be it about admittance to MEDD, what MEDD entails, or the difference between MEDD and Burnett Medical Scholars. Thanks!
The MEDD is a great opportunity for the right student. IMHO it’s better then bio medical engineering as it allows students to get a more holistic medical science background along with a complete engineering degree. The engineering degree chosen is flexible. This should provide an excellent background for graduated study in any of a variety of fields. The program is intended to provide a basis for medical school and produce doctors with the problem solving skills and technology background developed in engineering undergraduate education. Students who complete the program are guaranteed an interview with UCF’s medical school.
The program is not for everyone. It requires that students come in with significant AP of dual enrollment credit. They have worked out the overlap to make completion of the dual degree do-able but it’s still a large number of required credits. The dual degree requires ~160 credit hours depending on the engineering degree selected. If you’re trying to do both the MEDD program and the BMS program the credits required goes up 6-9 hours.
UCF is a large school and this is an example of the types of opportunities that great students can find on campus. Also, if you are in the honor’s college you get the advantages of the smaller classes and early registration. Our DD has found it be the best of both worlds. She is very happy with her choice of UCF.
@HappyDad2 , I heard the application deadline for MEDD program is Jan 15th. How do we go about applying?
Our DD requested an application from the honors college after hearing about the program during a national merit event. I don’t remeber it being overly complex. I would suggest sending them an email honors@ucf.edu. PM me if you don’t hear back I have some other ideas if that doesn’t yeild a good result. @rtpstudent
