Hi, I was hoping I could get some input regarding this program. I was just notified that I was accepted into the program. It is an 8-year BS/MD program, by the description (if I'm not mistaken).

In order to be accepted into the program I first had to be accepted to the UG, and then apply to the Honors College. Afterwards, I had to fill out a separate application (directly to the medical school). Approximately 10 days after I applied, I was notified of my acceptance.

What I'm confused about is mainly the fact that there is no interview required to be accepted into the program, unlike virtually every other BS/MD program I hear about (i.e. HPME, PLME, etc.) Instead, the interview is conducted later, at the end of UG. Should I be worried? Also, I might seem a little paranoid, but I am concerned as to the selectivity of the program itself. I'm not quite sure how many other individuals were accepted, and surely if it was a large number, UCF cannot simply reserve such a large number of seats for future medical students, right? In that case, there must be some sort of weeding-out factor. Also, while I consider myself a strong UG applicant, in general (I'll post stats as necessary), I do not believe I am a particularly strong applicant to direct medical programs, mainly due to extensive shadowing, clinical experience, etc.

That being said, I was just wondering if I could get some other opinions on this program. Thanks!

According to the article below, there were 12 students accepted to the program in 2013. Being admitted to the program is not a guarantee to UCF med school but the program provides guidelines and goals for you to strive to get into any med school. As you can see from the article, there are strict benchmarks to complete each year. And if you satisfy all the requirements, you will have a spot at UCF Med School. And if you don’t want to go to UCF, you will be a great candidate for any med school. There is an invitation only BMS information meeting and Q&A at UCF Med School on March 10. It will be a good opportunity for you to meet other BMS’s and ask all your questions to the admission. Any of you attending?

@covertcognomen Are you from Florida? That might be why there are three just from your school, assuming that the program might appear more prominently to local folk. I’m from Michigan, though.

@alethea I think I’ll be attending the info session. Were you admitted to the program also?

@tspro2014 My son was admitted. He is a NMF, so UCF is one of the full-ride school he is considering. He booked a ticket already to attend Scholars Day at UCF on Mar. 22, so he won’t be attending the info session for BMS program. If you are attending the info session, please share your experience afterwords.

I can’t make it to the info session, but @OGTMGT could you please tell me how it goes? I’m curious about this program, and I’m sure the others on the thread also are.

My son was one of the 12 accepted last year. I’ll try to answer any questions. We are Fl residents but we were living overseas (and he was going to school overseas) at the time of acceptance. He didn’t get a chance to go visit the medical school early (although they did offer a meet and greet). If you are unable to attend this they will do it again after school begins but on a smaller scale. They will have very little contact with you your freshman year. He has meet twice with them this year (basically to answer questions about shadowing and volunteering). It is designed this way I think. They want you to explore all of your options, major in whatever you want too and just be an undergraduate. This is not an accelerated program. Their interaction with you is suppose to steadily increase each year. Your honor’s advisor will be your go to person. This year it has been a bit of a challenge since most of the advisors are still kinda clueless about the BMS program. They are learning as they go so next year should be much better.

@afwife, was the meeting regarding volunteering and shadowing initiated by your son or the BMSP? Does the program provide such opportunity if a student requests? How does your son like UCF and honors program so far?

That meeting was held in the fall on the main campus. He told me they will notify you by email when a meeting is taking place. He likes the program (although they haven’t really done much as a group yet) and is currently living in the Honor’s dorm along with several other Burnett medical scholars. He has started his job shadowing and seems to enjoy it. You must set up your own volunteering and shadowing but they will provide you with points of contact. The only restriction on volunteering is it has to be human involved (no planting trees in a forest or volunteering in an animal shelter). The shadowing can be in any medical setting (they will give you forms to have signed by the medical staff). He had to ask for this form weeks after the meeting (they didn’t-or forgot to provide them). The form was emailed to him immediately so no big deal. I think a lot of these little kinks will be worked out by next year. He said the med school is really really nice.

Thank you for your detailed info! I appreciate it very much! UCF med school is 20 minutes away from the main campus. Does your son drive or take shuttle bus to get there?

He doesn’t have a car this year so he catches a ride with someone with a car. They offer a shuttle too but I’m not sure how often it runs. He has only been over there twice. A representative came to the Honor’s college on campus for the other meetings (which was only twice this year).

I would want to know your experience in Burnett Medical Scholars program. Is it easy or hard to get As in the Honors College or keep the grade requirement to stay in the BMSP. How about shadowing and volunteering and research? Are they easy to find? Thanks very much.
My daughter got an acceptance letter a few days ago BMSP without any interview! We are happy anyway, but also have some more questions about this program. I wish I could go some information session like the one of 2014.
@sunmij071 Did you attend the program on this past Thursday? My D was there, thought the med school was pretty amazing. She is an NMF, but could not stay for their dinner and reception the next day due to a scholastic competition commitment, but enjoyed her second visit to UCF quite a bit!
