Medical school

What is the chance of getting into medical school if you have 3.7 GPA, with 3yrs Research experiences, 300 or more volunteer hours, leadership qualities and have amazing recommendations?

Quite good, assuming you have great SAT/ACT scores (if you’re doing the BS/MD route) or solid MCAT scores (if you’re applying through the normal route…you didn’t really say which), of course pending on how well you do on the interview as well.

Yea you can have amazing stats but fail interview and not get in. ACE THE INTERVIEW! Good luck!

^Very hard to “fail” interview for regular non-psycho person. Just be yourself, and you will be fine.

You’d be surprised. You don’t have to be a psycho to screw up an interview. I screwed up a few myself along the way.

Agreed… I interviewed for a few BS/MD programs and my impression is that you can mess things up with a single thing you do or say. It’s like they have so many numerically competitive applicants that they’re looking for one to mess up in order to pick the ones that don’t.

I agree. While it is hard to screw up in an interview, you can say something that completely turns off an interviewer. Be yourself but be mature and take the interview seriously.

What you perceive as screwed up interview, most time is not that. Interview is mostly to see how you personally will fit into school as wel as to make sure that you are not psycho, untisocial person. If you were not chosen, that does not mean that you have screwed up, it means that somebody else was a better fit to school/program. I cannot imagine screwing up after my D. was accepted (finishing off) to combined program, after she has asked interviewer the meanning of a very common word during interview. Some say that she skrewed up, I thought so. Apparently not. her program had only 10 spots for incoming freshmen and happened to be very good fit for my D.
As more recent events, she has had few Med. School interviews and now has few additional choices. Her comments were that interviews were mostly conversational. If you are not good fit, not much you can do. Cannot pretend or lie, have to go with the next choice.

When I say screw up, I mean that you do something or say something that ticks off the interviewer. No offense, MiamiDAP, the difference between you and I, is that you have a second hand knowledge of interviews (through your daughter) whereas I went through interviews myself and am currently in a combined degree program :)

yea, no offense miamidap, but im gonna go with whatsupdoc in this situation, since he has firsthand experience, it makes sense that when there are like 100 ppl interviewed and only 20 get in, that even the smallest things screw you up. whatsupdoc, can you give us an example of a small screw up, if you remember?
thanks

Sorry busy with exams in school and did not get a chance to login. I do not exactly remember…something about them being too eager…could see the interviewer being turned off and ntohing could be done to salvage the interview. Just be yourself. Be calm and make sure that you are thoughtful in your answers.
