My daughter has a chronic illness and therefore qualifies for a medical single. She really doesn't need one but it is an option. I was wondering if this is the best option as a freshman as far as social life goes. Thanks.

If it's a freshman friendly dorm I would say go for it. The stress of a potentially evil roommate is soooo not worth it. Even now my roomies are nice people but very distracting to my studies and I think studies should come first in these sorts of situations. You can always knock on your neighbours door:)

My D is in the same situation and is very happy to have a single. She needs her sleep and enjoys some privacy. She has no problems with the social aspects. Friends stop in and she visits others.

If she's qualifies for a single for medical reasons, take it. DD had medical issues but was not eligible for a single. The school did provide her with an air conditioner so she could breathe, but her obnoxious roommate complained so much about it that DD finally gave up using it and suffered the consequences. Go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy the biggest rubber doorstop you can find, and tell your D to prop her door open if she wants to socialize. Chances are she'll have more company than she needs, as all her friends retreat to her room when they can't stand their own roommates!

Take the single, and if you or she is worried about socializing, have her bring a tv and some brownies, and she'll have all the friends she can stand.
