Medical Turnback

Can anyone explain the process of being medically outprocessed from BCT? How serious does an injury have to be to be sent home? Any healing time allowed? Any consideration given to a basic cadet who wants to stay and keep trying? Who makes the decision to medically outprocess a basic cadet? When and how are the parents notified that their basic cadet will not be allowed to continue through BCT?

If a Basic has a condition that will prevent him/her from completing 80% of BCT, they will be turned back. The medical staff will make the determination. Even if a Basic is participating in non-physical activities such as briefings, room setup, etc., but unable to participate in the physical activities (PT, intramurals, flight drills), that is considered a full day away, and they're only allowed about 7. An MRI will account for about 4 days. The parents will usually be notified when a Cadre lends the Basic a cell phone to inform them of his/her situation. There won't be much more contact until a determination is made and the Basic is moved to Mission Support, in which case they'll get their cell phone back and you can speak to them whenever you like. They are moved to Mission Support once the outprocessing has begun. The process can take up to two weeks to gather all the required signatures.

At least this has been our experience.

Also, each cadet has to successfully complete a certain number of the activities in Jack's Valley. Forgive me for not knowing the details. But evidently minor illnesses leading to loss of training at crucial times can lead to a turnback.

BTW does anyone have any info on the rumored cadet in a wheel chair on I-Day? There was actually a cadet in a wheel chair during BCT last summer also, but I never got any details about it from my son.

If a basic is constantly sick, they may be turned back.

We had one guy tear his ACL on the A-course, but he completed most everything else (minus parts of each course).

I believe that the basic in the wheelchair was being turned back.
