Meeting the needs of the biggest freshman class ever!

Rice University | News & Media

I'm also curious to hear about the Class of '15 medallions that I saw in one of the O-Week photos .... when were they distributed, etc.? Hope all the Owls are making a comfortable transition into Fall Term.

Recent text message from D, a MUSI, ended with “Life is awesome”.

'nuf said. :-)

Mthoma, DD found near nirvana, Rice and MUSI - i understand perfectly. :)

Life is indeed awesome. I’m happier than ever. Oh and I have a secret about that article. :)

And yet they still gave us only one section of Physics 101…
Over 300 people in that class. We run out of seats daily and people sit on the stairs

Very sorry to hear this, Sockcreature. I’ve always thought one of the nicest aspects of Rice is its ability to be a top research university with the feel of an LAC. Sitting on stairs … that’s absurd! Bigger is not better. (Except that there are strong benefits to increasing the base of Owl alum.) I hope you can start/join a physics study group to discuss some of the class/reading material and prep for upcoming tests – and I hope you reach out to the prof during office hours with questions, thoughts …

1000 freshman, 300 in physics? What % are freshman?

I think almost all of us are freshman. Our class has a lot of engineers, and physics is required for pretty much every major.

Luckily none of my other classes are nearly this large

The freshman intros were absolutely swamped for seats during add/drop. The lack of a second section for Phys 101 was a bit absurd. I have a few friends who are not Freshmen taking it, and they have to get there 10 minutes early to get a seat.

What in the world?

I get the feeling that Rice got blindsided by this and wasn’t able to get another section going in time. Physics 101 will be large, but 300 is positively absurd.

Be sure to email Dean Hutchinson at ugdean@rice.edu and let him know. You can email the head of the physics department as well. That way, they can make sure Phys 102 (next semester) isn’t as bad.
