What are the rules for, say, girls who wish to spend a little time at a guy's dorm? Till what time can they stay? I know its different for each college, but some idea please.

Unless you go to one of the more strict religious schools, there won't be any rules.

At my school members of the opposite sex can be in a room from 8 AM till 2 AM and only with consent of the roommate. I guess if they decide to spend the night and the RA caught them there would be trouble, but who would really care?

None of the colleges Ive visited had rules except for Catholic U

public universities in california such as SFSU and SJSU follow a rule something along the lines of an overnight guest will only be allowed to stay a few nights a month and with the consent of the room-mate. you cant just put a mattress on the floor and move your homies in!

the whole opposite sex rule is meaningless in public schools. who's to say if you're gay, straight, if its your sister, brother, or cousin.. thats YOUR business.

i know that USF doesnt allow people to visit between certain hours. they have some kind of rule like everyone who comes over after 7pm has to sign in at the guarded front desk and the person has to sign out by midnight or something.

Actually a lot of public schools probably do have some rules on overnight guests of the opposite sex. There was a time in which the colleges used to act as parents. Whether they are enforced ever in this day and age is an entirely different matter.

At my school and at others that I visited friends at the offical rule was no opposite sex guest past 2AM. Entrance into the dorms after midnight required showing a student ID and the resident had to sign in the guest. In fact at my alma mater, there was an effort by the campus security to begin enforcing that rule in the fraternity houses...it was a pain in the ass and there was a lot of complaining.

Basically it's the rule of how you want to be known.

At my school (which is public, but also in the middle of the bible belt) males aren't allowed in all-female dorms or all-female floors of co-ed dorms midnight to noon (not that anyone follows the rules, and it's REALLY hard to enforce in the co-ed dorms anyway). There's only a desk assistant at the front until midnight anyway, so if you come in with a guy after that, no one sees. I had 4 friends (3 guys and a girl) stay until 4 am once and no one was any the wiser. There aren't any all-male dorms except the athletic dorm on my campus (and the athletes can get away with murder so I'm sure they have chicks stay over) but the all-male floors in the co-ed dorms aren't supposed to have female guests either I assume the same hours as the girls aren't supposed to have guys.

True, the way I interpreted the question was bringing girls/guys who are in the college in, with overnight guests who don't have school ID cards there are some schools where its not as simple (though not at mine, we have no security guards at the dorms and not at G'town where I stayed overnight without a problem)

weird, they treat you like kids. like theyre judging you and saying that sex is wrong or something. thats the rediculous attitude that beleives condoms should be illegal and that leads to 14 year olds getting pregnant

Smith though I agree with you personally I don;t believe it is appropriate to call anyone's beliefs ridiculous.

maybe rediculous was not the right word, but i do not beleive that people over the age of 18 of the opposite sex should be stopped from spending time together by a public institution, it doesnt make sense to me.

It's partially the sex issue yes, but I think it is also a safety issue. The RA can't keep control over the dorm if random people are in and out at all hours of the night, and if god forbid something happens like a rape, it's the RA's responsibility to find out who did it and if it's someone random and not even living there that someone just let in, then there's gonna be a big problem. I didn't like having guys I didn't know around the dorm, esp at all hours of the night (yes occasionally I did see someone sneak in with their boyfriend or whoever at 3 am). I've only done it once and it was only because we didn't have anywhere else to go where we could watch movies (and technically they came in legally, they just didn't leave by the right time).

apartment highrises often have security guards at the entrances and they phone up to the resident when someone arrives to see them. residents give the guards guest lists when theyre having a party. the way i see it, you're renting the place and employing the security, who are they to tell you that you cant have sex with your uncle?

at my school there are no rules. If your roomie complains that's the only time the school gets involved.

At public schools its not really the sex issue, like AUI said it is a safty issue. if random people can come in whats to stop those people from randomly walking out with some of your stuff? I personally like the policy at my school where anyone visiting after 9 must registar at the front desk and be escorted by the person they are visiting into the dorm area (which is locked 24/7).

I just wonder how often people have sex with their roommate in the room.

There's no rules at my school... I don't think. But then again, several of the dorms have co-ed floors and co-ed bathrooms, so having the opposite sex in the dormroom is nothing compared to sharing a bathroom with them.

what school

As far as I know the having sex while your roommate is in the room isn;t unheard of. I would be completely disgusted, I think its very rude.
