Merit aid at Miami of Ohio

@2manycollegequestions4me in the end, all scores were sent by my S. Seemed silly to not since it only cost $12

Yes, merit aid scholarships are becoming a lot more competitive. Oldest son (OOS) 2016 HS grad, 35 ACT, 4.17/4.0 GPA, 11 AP classes, sports, ECs received $33,000/year. Youngest son (OOS) 2018 HS grad, 35 ACT, 4.20/4.0 GPA, 9 AP classes, captain of football team (4 year starter) just received his letter. $22,000/year.

My son got his letter today. He is in state, 35 on his ACT, 3.6/4.0 UW; 4.0 weighted. He got $9,000 per year. So somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 tuition.

OOS son received his merit aid letter today and we are very disappointed in Miami’s offer. He has a 34 and 1540 and is a National Merit Semi-Finalist (Finalist pending). Received $20,000 per year (a little over half tuition) plus the University Academic Scholars Program award of $1-2,000 per year and possibly another $1,000 per year for NMS. Not going to cut it!

In-state daughter with 34 ACT, 4.0 got 14,000, so just shy of full tuition and will be a second-generation redhawk next fall!

Anyone know what the requirements are in order to keep the scholarship from year to year? Thanks

My daughter received her merit letter yesterday.
In state engineering major.
32 ACT and 4.3 weighted GPA
Strong ECs including four year cheerleader, varsity captain, NHS - secretary
Drama club - VP and participated in five musical theater productions.
Academic team fours years with varsity letter junior year
300 volunteer hours

Parents both Redhawks. Go Miami! Would love to see her at Miami. She loves Ohio State equally though and has been accepted. They are both such nice schools so happy she has a couple options she is happy with. I believe OSU has the stronger engineering program so need to take another visit to each and do some research.

So merit aid for Miami have been sent? We haven’t seen anything about merit aid.

Waiting and hoping, 500 miles away from campus.

@GaelRacer I don’t know why you are disappointed. It sounds like a very generous offer to me. If it is not the best offer your son has received then don’t pick Miami.

D’15 (instate) had a 35 ACT (SS, 34 otherwise) and a 3.9ish gpa. She was offered 3/4 tuition, didn’t go there.

Perhaps because the pattern that’s evident is that awards are consistently towards the low end of the published ranges. Plus, Miami’s sticker price is somewhat inflated (compare with e.g., Ohio State) , which also contributes to hopes/expectations of high merit aid.

@BasicOhioParent In the end, our kids all applied to multiple schools and will receive multiple offers. I think a student can get a great price on the wrong school and hurt the family financially. Conversely, a student can pay a little more than they wanted to for the right school and still come out way ahead. Also, a lot of the parents on cc who are fixated on tuition price are going to let their kids major in subjects that have no job prospects. Point being, it’s not going to matter much in the big picture if Miami gives you a few extra grand or not, what matters is if it is the right school that your student will do well at with the right major and come out highly employable.

Why? With his grades (3.96/4.40), test scores (34 and 1540), AP scores (seven 5s), NMS, 150 hrs community service, etc. he has received several full rides from many out of state flagship schools. He really likes Miami’s size and FSB. Even when you include the money for being named a University Academic Scholasr and NMS, Miami’s offer is at the lower end of their published scholarship range and it doesn’t even bring Miami down to our in state school prices.

@GaelRacer It sounds like your son has done really well and has a lot of great options!

Got my son’s letter today. We are very impressed with the offer, 34k a year (out of state). Miami is for sure at the top of son’s list now!

S’s merit letter arrived- $17,000. OOS, Summer Scholar, 32ACTSS, 3.76uw, 4.6w, 10 APs, Honors invite.
He also sent in a portfolio for Art so it is a possibility that he may receive an additional scholarship. The kink in that hope is that he is no longer sure he wants to major in an art.

My daughter is very surprised and pleased by her merit award from Miami, she received $22,000 OOS which is more than anticipated. I know the merit awards this year at most major public universities have been a bit all over the map and super competitive, so she wasn’t really getting her hopes up. Her stats for those that are curious are 34 ACT, 4.55 wtd GPA (4.0 uw), 9 APs, lots of ECs/leadership, she writes well but I didn’t read her essay so I can’t speak to its strength but I know her topic was interesting. She applied to college of arts & science for a double major in Russian and Economics. I’m sorry for those who are disappointed, she’s had her share of disappontments aw well. Congrats to those that have heard good news. This award makes her decision a lot harder now. Best of luck to those waiting!

This is surely correct. In one of the threads about the big merit Southern schools, it was said that the students who were most dissatisfied with their experience tended to be the ones who came for the low price.

On the other hand, it’s a bit disheartening that this Ohioan can’t send his kid to Mother Miami for the same price as 'Bama or Ole Miss.

@123college_ Can you elaborate on your son’s EC’s etc., did he visit to show interest? I saw on another post that he has a 34 and 4+ gpa. Yours is the first full tuition I’ve seen, other 34 ACTs have been lower offers. I’m curious what ECs stood out to them?
