@ChattaChia He has a 4.0 UW and 4.3 W, and I think he has taken about 7 AP classes. He has a couple leadership positions in clubs, NHS, 2 JV sports, and was involved in three separate ECs working with kids with special needs. We visited once last year and once to attend the Bridges program. He is also half Hispanic, which I think was a big factor because I’ve heard Miami is really looking to add diversity to campus. Although the letters are broad with what amount came from Bridges, my bet is Bridges was a decent chunk of his package
@BasicOhioParent Perhaps the problem is that these schools are offering so much aid to OOS students?
@EDHDAD I believe merit figures are going to naturally be higher for OOS students since they have to pay almost more than twice the amount in tuition.
OOS Daughter received $25K/year in scholarships. We are not eligible for need based aid. 31 ACT super scored and 3.7 UW GPA. 6 APs. Accepted into Honors at the University and School level. Pleased with the award.
@Pastpower I understand that. I just think it’s kinda funny that I can send my CA kids to school cheaper in Ohio than my own state, Basic OhioParent can send their kid to school cheaper in Alabama or Mississippi, etc.
Thanks for sharing @123college_ that’s very helpful!
I think that there are so many factors that go into merit awards that are just not visible to us; many factors such as geographic diversity, major and/or college, extra curriculars, interest shown, strength of essay etc etc are all part of this puzzle. Unfortunately as we’ve found across the board this year test scores and GPA alone are not enough to really gauge where a student will land in the mysterious world of merit. Kids with the same stats at many public universities (and I’m sure private as well) are getting vastly different awards that at face value make absolutely no sense. I’ve learned to let this go, initially had some disappointment early in the process and occasionally get that ping of frustration, but overall it’s a business and for better or worse our kids are the commodity. My job is to help the kid navigate the offers and give her some insight into the financials to help her make the best financial and career choice. I’m so sorry for those that are disappointed; it’s such an emotional time but as someone told my daughter once (and it still rings true): Love the College that Loves You. They will ultimately find their path and end up where they belong.
@AmyBeth68 Very well stated.
My son received his merit today and we are thrilled. 3.6w gpa and a 1460 SAT - his essay was great, lots of EC’s and leadership. OOS for $17k
Congratulations to everyone here. We just received a very generous scholarship too. We are out of state as well. This offer is a little higher than what Miami had published on their page. However, it is not as high as some of the ones being posted here for similar stats, backgrounds,Bridges etc and it is not enough to make Miami the most affordable option. .We are still very grateful to have received this scholarship and for Miami to believe in her. We never fell that we were entitled to anything. Just a process which is very unpredictable and more of a reason to apply to a number of schools
Miami is an amazing school and it was one of the top choices going into process But once OSU made an amazing commitment to her, she was ready to commit to them. She was just waiting to hear from Miami and patiently on others. I think OSU made a great decision Either way she might be OHIO bound
:x :x
S got his award and we were pleased, especially given what I’ve seen on here. OOS, 35/1550, 3.99 uw, NMSF, multi sport athlete and lots of other ECs. 29k OOS. Currently his cheapest option, but lots left to hear from.
My son received his letter today as well- $19K OOS. 34 ACT, 4.2 GPA, 7 AP with all 4/5 scores. All the usual academic and extracurricular clubs and organizations, plus 4 years varsity soccer. Several family alumni, another aunt who works for MU. We are Ohio natives, but moved south with husband’s job 4 years ago. All the poor kid has worked for is to “come back home” to Miami, but looks like in state offers are going to be much better. So bummed for him, but $28K a year is too hefty a price tag for us to put out or for him to borrow!
S was accepted on 12/21, we have not received a merit letter yet. 33 ACT 3.5uw GPA, I am starting to worry. We received a postcard today congratulating him on his acceptance, is that what we get instead? (“I got a rock”). Miami is his #1 so I am staying hopeful because it’s not gonna happen without merit, he has received it elsewhere, Anyone else get the postcard? Congrats to all who have been accepted and received merit!!!
@“WhatsaMomtodo?” We got the postcard
@"WhatsaMomtodo” we received merit letter yesterday and postcard today. Some people posting show notifications of the mail to come that day… I am not that technical apparently, but maybe try to see what is coming your way in USPS?
Btw, love the Charlie Brown reference.
@“WhatsaMomtodo?” don’t stress…we also got the postcard. The letter is separate and hopefully you’ll see it in your mail soon.
Thanks all! S is not worrying at all so I keep my impatience to myself. I signed up for USPS informed delivery but it takes a few days to activate. Our mail usually doesn’t arrive until 5:30 and this is killing me! I know he will end up exactly where he should, I just want to know where that will be, lol. We are in state and only about an hour away from Oxford so I can’t help thinking if a letter is coming it would be here by now.
@whatsamomtodo Love the “I got a rock” reference. We are a little disappointed here as well that a Miami letter hasn’t arrived. We did get that nice postcard, though, two days ago. According to website, my D is in range for some merit dollars, so we will practice patience. I just hope we don’t have to wait until after the holiday weekend.
Congrats to all who have heard! Those are a lot of sweet awards I have been seeing, and hopefully will make Miami a more affordable choice for many kids.
Received the letter in the mail yesterday: $34k/yr for OOS. This along with admission to the Honors Program makes Miami a top choice for me.
Came in the mail today, $24,000 plus the $2,000 for the Scholars Program. DS with 35 ACT, 4.0 GPA, All AP or dual credit courses. Leader in 2 EC’s, lots of volunteer hours, NHS, works with special needs kids, and works every summer. Was hoping for the higher end. Unless a private school offers a large amount he will go to our state university who doesn’t offer the type of honors program that he is interested in. My older son, almost 10 years ago, had a 28 ACT and 4.0 GPA and received the same % amount for scholarship at another in-state university. Very disappointing.
