@montegut – our local private has reduced their “full rides” as well. Up until last year NMF was an automatic full ride; now not so, judged on a case by case basis. Up side is that they didn’t award those generous sums to anyone BUT NMF’s previously and now they’ve opened it up to high ACTs as well. Double edged sword – fewer awards and bigger applicant pool.

However our state school has grown this year to the highest number of NMF of any public university as they are very aggressive in recruiting high achievers such as your S and extremely generous. I wonder if the change in our local private’s policy contributed to that stat in NMFs deciding on Honors College/full ride at the state school instead of a lesser award at the private???

Marquette is bad about this i got 14k and i wanted to apply for the jesuit half-tuition but i cannot combine them so… There is no way I am about to pay 26k a year to there when a school like Ohio state is only 20k full ticket i mean i want to go to marquette for sure but then i have to pay for med school and it just gets ridiculous. unless somehow i can get the engineering full-ride but theres only one and i have a 4.4 unweighted and 30 ACT with 770 SAT math at a jesuit high school is it possible??

@archimom - Hope everything works out for your S. The numbers they gave you make sense. I had seen the 21k from the alumni newsletter. When my S applied in 2009 it was the record with 19k. D applied in 2010 and it stayed about the same. I know they accept between 8k to 10k depending on the pool of applicants to yield as close to 1,900 as possible. That would be the max for incoming class unless school expands. I believe they are getting ready for that, as you might have noticed they just completed a new building for law school (August 2010) and a new eng. building is under construction (phase I will be ready by August 2011). My guess is they are taking care of teaching facilities first and then expand housing / dining /etc. But that is just my guess.

@nickfarrar - You must be an Ohio resident? OOS tuition for OSU is closer to $35k. Unless you get a major scholarship it would be very hard for a private school to able to match your state u. tuition. The full eng. is a competitive scholarship so it would not hurt to apply. Since you got the full 14k you are in the top % of applicants so it could be an alternative, but you only have until tomorrow (2/15) to mail the application!

21,000 was the applicant pool. MU continues to target an incoming class of about 1950 Freshman. The overall student body size hasn’t really changed in many years. . . about 8,200 undergrads, 12,000 total. I believe that the number of accepted students is in that 10,000-11,000 range.

Construction of the various new facilities should not be intrepreted as a desire to expand the student body overall. It should be noted that some colleges within the university are much tougher to get into than others. Nursing is certainly the hardest to get into with Arts & Sciences somewhat less selective.

MU places particular attention on two groups namely legacy students and ‘first in family to college’. They track those numbers closely. Last year the Freshman class included about 20% in each category with my daughter being one of about 30 third generation legacy students.

My s recieved a 10k/year Ignatius but no Magis. Eagle scout, lots of church volunteer work. Do You have to be from a Jesuit H.S. to get a magis award? He has 9 ap’s and a 31 act. Is 10k/year about right? Thanks

That sounds about right. I was slightly let down by recieving a 10k/year Ignatious as well. I have a 28 ACT, 4.035 GPA, have a lot of volunteer work and leadership positions. I’ve heard that the Magis was awarded based on leadership and volunteer. I’m the first chair in my school’s orchestra and officer of a couple clubs and recieved the magis.

Ignatius & Magis combined max. total is 14 K so do not feel like you were at the bottom. You were probably in the top 15% from the pool of accepted applicants to get the 10K.

Thanks for the feedback. My guess is You work in the admissions dept. When will the fafsa based financial packages become available? I have recieved the UC’s already. Does MU offer any need based aid on top of federal pell grants? Thanks.

No I do not work for the adm. dept. just an alumnus. S2 is currently a sophomore. My daughter applied last year and was accepted but decided to attend another U. I just stayed on the forum to try to help since I have been through this whole app. thing for 3 kids 3 yrs. in a row lol. Yes MU gives need based on top of any scholarship. My S got a 6K grant based on need aid. With Ignatius/Magis, grant, & Pell we get about half COA. Fin. aid packages should be arriving betwee now and end of March. If you have any other questions lmk. Good luck!

Thanks so much, great info. I think my s will still end up elsewhere but I am the sole check writer with a d at UCSD now, so $$$ will be a factor.

I’m transferring in as a sophomore for fall and I got 12k Ignatius and 3.5k Magis. I think the max for Ignatius is 14k and I have no idea how much the max on the Magis is.

@popeyoung5 RE: Magis My S got a small-to-medium Magis but no Ignatius. High ACT’s, 6 AP’s, 9 honors, most rigorous curriclum in his Catholic (not Jesuit) school, tons of leadership, two sport athlete all 4 years, eagle scout, but relatively low unweighted GPA. So no, don’t have to be a Jesuit grad.

And from what I read here and elsewhere, 10K Ignatius is pretty good. MU seems to be a lightweight in merit aid – My S got $14K from a comparable Jesuit University and almost that much from 2 other LAC’s yet less than $6K from MU.

I’m going into the School of Business Administration and majoring in Marketing. 3.71 GPA at U of San Diego last semester and taking this sem off. I got a 29 ACT and 3.5 unweighted GPA from a private college prep school.

The Ignatius/Magis is open to all. From the Marquette scholarship site:

IGNATIUS SCHOLARSHIPS

Ignatius Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis, and all freshman and transfer applicants are considered. Magis awards are given on the basis of the entire application.
Historically, freshmen applicants who have excelled in the classroom and have performed well on standardized examinations have received scholarship awards from Marquette.
Transfer applicants are reviewed based upon a combination of college and high school performance as well as leadership and service activities.

Kre, were you involved in a lot of ECs and service activities while in college?

My son was very involved in high school, but has not done anything yet in college, still adapting.

You got even more than him in merit aid as an incoming freshman, but I wonder if he transferred for his third year, if he would get any aid, despite excellent grades, because he has not had the time to be as involved as he was in high school.

@Montegut in Kre case he was competing against the pool of transfer applicants. So your S would compete against the incoming transfers. Not having EC’s and service activities would hurt the Magis portion of the scholarship.
