I graduated 3rd in my class and recieved an senior academic acheivement award would I qualify for a merit based scholarship? How do they work?

It varies a bit, but at many schools they’re awarded solely on the basis of GPA and SAT/ACT scores. The bigger awards, full tuition and more, tend to also have an essay/interview component. For transfers, they’re based on college GPA (and often intended program of study).

My overall gpa is good (3.8+), but my act is terrible (22). So there isn’t much hope for me in getting one, huh?

It depends on the school to which you apply.

Ice, are you a transfer student? If so, ACT scores may not be required. They’re more likely to look at your college GPA. Look at the college websites for the exact requirements.

Ice-
Could you give a little more info as to what you are looking for? Its kinda late in the game to be looking for scholarship $$ for this fall, but you can certainly apply for outside scholarships-- check the fastweb site and such for scholarships.

No, I am not a transfer student. I just graduated high school.

I don’t know i’ve been trying different sites (fastweb and scholarships com)do you guys know of any others?

Did you check with the guidance office at your high school? Many have postings of “local scholarships” that you may qualify for. The national ones, if evaluated by test scores, etc., will be tough with an average ACT score. The national ones, if essay based, might be a better shot for you. If you qualified for an automatic scholarship at your college you should have known that by now, although I don’t recall any with ACTs scores below about 25. But you could google scholarship + “22 ACT” and see what happens. If there are departmental ones that aren’t automatic they should be spelled out in your information from the college or on the college website. Also, if your parents belong to any clubs there might be scholarships that way. Finally places of empoyment, if either of your parents work for large companies, it’s possible there are company scholarships. These alass, are generally highly competitive and ACT/SAT score based and it may be too late for this fall.

Are you a HS Senior entering college in the fall? If so unfortunately it is very late in the game.

No, i just graduated. I know that this is probably very late for doing this though.
