Merit Money

What scholarships does Carolina offer for out-of-staters?

Are any partial tuition, or are they all full tuition? (Beside National Merit)

How competitive is the pool?

nlt51: UNC offers a number of scholarships to both in-state and out-of-state students. Here's a link from the web site that details non-need based (merit) scholarships: <a href="http://studentaid.unc.edu/studentaid/type/ssa_scholarships.html%5B/url%5D">http://studentaid.unc.edu/studentaid/type/ssa_scholarships.html</a></p>

UNC has one of the best financial aid programs because of its benefactors and its large endowment fund. the only scholarships that you have to apply for are the morehead and the Pogue scholarship. The rest is administered through the office of student aid and is based on merit and need.

madakota1: The Robertson Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship, and though you can't apply for it, you can send in a supplement expressing interest. Both the Robertson and the Morehead are not technically administered by the University, but by their respective programs. As mentioned, you have to be nominated by your school for the Morehead (or you can be nominated by the admissions office, but very rare). For the Robertson, those nominees are culled from admissions. Also, there are many other scholarships, including Carolina Scholars, that are also merit based. I think the details on most all of them are provided in the link above; that link will also take you to the need-based scholarships as well, though.

Right, all of the merit-based scholarships on their website for OOS people are full tuition, room, and board. I'm wondering if that's all they offer, or if there are other partial-tuition ones that aren't listed.

National Merit, though that's also listed. I think UNC did institute some new scholarship money (just last year?) for in-state students (maybe about 60 awarded at $2500 or so, as I remember) and about 5 at $15K or so for OOS? That's vague, but something like that-- from what I remember reading. Not sure it's on their site, though.

Okay..here's a link to the announcement about those new merit scholarships, announced last March: <a href="http://www.unc.edu/news/archives/mar05/merit032405.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.unc.edu/news/archives/mar05/merit032405.html</a></p>

Interesting...$60,000 over four years would not then be a full tuition scholarship.

Well, $15,000 per year is really just under full OOS tuition, isn't it? What is OOS now, around $18,000 or less?

Yes. OOS tuition is $17,000.

I'm just curious because I'm a "finalist" for UNC's merit-based scholarship competition. It is about 80 in-state people and 25 out-of-state people. (This is from the EA pool.) Therefore, I was trying to judge how good my chances are for receiving x amount of money.

My bud's D got a full tuition scholarship. I think she was about 2200 on her SATs and near the top of her class in GPA.

nlt51: Congratulations! To answer your question, I'm sure the pool is pretty competitive, but you must be also, so you probably have a strong chance. Good luck!

Just out of curiosity, when did y'all get your Merit Scholarship Finalist letters, and when were they dated? Thanks!

The merit scholarship letters were dated 12-21-05...and the likely letters were dated 12-14-05

Hey - thanks much for the info.
