Has anyone had a child go to St. Michael's and receive extra/enhanced consideration for merit/scholarship money for playing a sport? I know in some colleges, coaches will push admissions for players that they really want on the team to receive scholarship money that they would normally not qualify for. I know they have athletic scholarships at St. Michael's, but not all the players are covered. They have a limited number of scholarship slots and I was wondering if the have "incentives" for the other slots on a team.

Anyone have first hand experience with this? Ballpark amounts?

I’m a junior at Saint Michael’s and I’m almost, almost positive that they only provide athletic scholarships for basketball players and no other sports.
I honestly don’t think that there are any “incentives” as Saint Mike’s isn’t a huge sports school.
Someone else who is on a sports team may be able to answer better than I can, though.

Thank you for your question. I contact Greg Cluff, our athletic liason in the Admission Office to give you the best possible answer that I could. I hope this helps!

BasketballDad,

The issue of athletic financial aid at SMC is one in which many prospective student-athletes and their parents are interested!

Stated simply, SMC gives athletic scholarship aid in Men’s and Women’s Basketball……exclusively. Those scholarships follow NCAA guidelines and requirements and fall under the purview of SMC Compliance Officer Chris Kenny. The basketball coaching staffs evaluate prospects for such aid.

All other potential SMC student-athletes are candidates for merit aid. This aid is distributed pursuant to SMC institutional goals and scholarship awards are based upon the accepted student’s overall high school record. For purposes of admission and financial aid consideration, an SMC coach can certainly advocate for a potential player and the interest of the coach will be noted as part of the prospect’s file. This support would be similar to a letter of support from a high school guidance counselor, teacher or coach.
